Betting tips for Manchester United vs Burnley: Carabao Cup preview and odds

The Carabao Cup round of 16 takes place this week and Wednesday’s three ties include Manchester United against Championship leaders Burnley at Old Trafford (kick-off, 8pm)

Erik ten Hag is likely to rotate his United line-up for this fixture and give minutes to fringe members of his squad, while the Clarets – who are managed by former Manchester City captain Vincent Kompany – will travel in confident mood after winning 10 and drawing one of their previous 12 matches.

United can make class tell

This is United’s first match since the World Cup break and rustiness may be a factor for some of those players who were involved in Qatar. They have not had a competitive match since November 13, while Burnley have played and won twice in the past 10 days.

The Clarets may be quicker out of the blocks than United. They have netted six goals in their previous two games and are flying high at the top of the Championship, so they go into the game full of confidence and it would be no surprise if they scored, perhaps even early in the game.

However, United should grow into the game and begin to make their class tell. Ten Hag will view this competition as one United can win and will be desperate to make it to the quarter-finals, and with a strong bench, we expect United to edge this game, even if Burnley cause them a few problems.

Martial looks to seize chance

After his exertions with England, Marcus Rashford is likely to be afforded a little rest before United’s league match with Nottingham Forest on December 27.

It’s likely that Anthony Martial will lead the line for United in this clash, and the Frenchman will be eager to impress his manager, especially now that Cristiano Ronaldo has left Old Trafford.

Martial has performed well when called upon this term, scoring four goals in seven appearances in all competitions, including one in the 4-2 win over Aston Villa in the third round.

The France striker is even money to find the back of the net at any time on Wednesday, which we believe to be a nice play as either a single or part of your Bet Builder for the game.

Christmas card for Cork

Jack Cork is the linchpin in Burnley’s midfield and the former England player will be vital for the visitors at Old Trafford, looking to break up United’s counter-attacks in the middle of the park.

His defensive capabilities are excellent, however he can be often caught out with the timing of his challenges. The tough-tackling 33-year-old has picked up more yellow cards than any other player in the Championship so far this season with nine in 22 appearances including each of the last four.

Up against United’s pace and athleticism in midfield, Cork could well find his name going into the book once more in this tie.
