Big Bets review: $20,000 bet on Gold Trip goes astray

The Australian Cup field of 2023

The favourite winning a feature race is always going to be a people-pleaser (to the masses, anyway), and several big bets landed on the Godolphin 8YO on Saturday.

HITS

$4500 @ $2.70 on Flemington R6 No.8 What You Need (Ladbrokes)

The Price/Kent Jnr galloper made it look very easy in what was a quasi-matchrace with Benedetta down the straight. What You Need probably had the advantage drawing the outside, but he made the most of it.

$10,000 @ $3.60 on Flemington R7 No.1 Cascadian (TAB)

$5000 @ $3.60 on Flemington R7 No.1 Cascadian (Palmerbet)

$4500 @ $3.30 on Flemington R7 No.1 Cascadian (Pointsbet)

The 8YO Godolphin galloper was a deserved winner of the Australian Cup, running past the majority of the field from the top of the straight to score comfortably.

$5000 @ $2.70 on Rosehill R7 No.1 Prowess (Palmerbet)

$3000 @ $2.60 on Rosehill R7 No.1 Prowess (neds)

This NZ filly could be something special, and these punters had the privilege of a very sweet watch in Saturday's Vinery Stud Stakes.

$5000 @ $3.10 on Flemington R1 No.4 Veranskova (neds)

It was one of those odd cases of ‘you wouldn't want it again' as it looked like Veranskova wouldn't wind up to hit the line, but the Alderson galloper did get there in the nick of time for favourite backers in the first.

MISSES

$5000 @ $3.70 on Rosehill R2 No.3 The Years (TAB)

$2000 @ $19 on Rosehill R2 No.9 Miss Ghent (TAB)

These cracks at the G3 Baillieu Handicap went by the wayside, with Godolphin pair Amur and Inhibitions filling the quinella.

$13,000 @ $4.80 on Rosehill R3 No.4 Stroke Of Luck (Ladbrokes)

$8000 @ $3.80 on Rosehill R3 No.4 Stroke Of Luck (neds)

This was the mother of all stitch-ups, as Stroke Of Luck didn't get an ounce of it.

How far. Fair dinkum #strokeofluck

$20,000 @ $4.40 on Rosehill R8 No.1 Gold Trip (TAB)

$4000 @ $5 on Rosehill R8 No.14 Montefilia (neds)

Gold Trip came up a few lengths short, while Montefilia was the only danger to winner Arapaho late but ultimately fell short.

$5000 @ $4.80 on Rosehill R10 No.11 Substantial (Palmerbet)

The Snowden gelding started the $4F, but finished 5th, beaten 2.83L.

$4000 @ $5 on Flemington R5 No.9 So Unusual (neds)

He was shooting for five straight wins, but the streak came to an end as he was beaten over 8L.

$10,000 (Tote SP) on Flemington R9 No.3 My Yankee Girl (Topsport)

It was her first start back at Flemington since being relegated in a controversial protest over the whip rule, but there was far less drama on Saturday when humbled by 8L.

$10,000 (Tote SP) on Ascot R8 No.1 Admiration Express (Topsport)

$4000 @ $3 on Ascot R8 No.1 Admiration Express (Palmerbet)

We'll let her jockey Lucy Fiore (nee Warwick) tell you how this one went.

$4000 @ $3.20 on Eagle Farm R1 No.1 Felix The Scat (Pointsbet)

‘Felix' certainly didn't disgrace himself, but ultimately had to settle for 2nd by 0.26L.

$5000 @ $2.10 on Eagle Farm R3 No.5 The Red Kite (Pointsbet)

Another fav went under early here, after starting $1.85 but was beaten less than half-a-length into third.

$4,000 (Tote SP) on Eagle Farm R9 No.3 Baanone (Topsport)

Finished back in the pack, beaten 3.28L into eighth place.

$5,000 @ $7 on Toowoomba R2 No.2 Orleans Rock (Topsport)

Finished sixth of nine, beaten 4.4L.
