Big bets hits and misses: Punter loses $44k on horse that hit $1.03 in-play

Bookmakers just about got the lot at Randwick on Saturday, with a number of five-figure wagers missing the mark including one $50,000 get-out throw at the stumps in the last race.

Imperatriz, who looked home and hosed, was a cruel result for many punters, including one losing bet of $44,640 while Aft Cabin let his followers down again with an underwhelming performance in the Group 1 Randwick Guineas costing one punter $30,000.

Check out all the ‘big bets' hits and misses below, including some massive misguided plays on the Gold Coast Poly.

HITS

$20,000 on Kallos @ $3.35 (Sportsbet)

$10,000 on Kallos @ $3.50 (TAB)

A Jamie Kah pearler saw this Godolphin galloper return a winner in race three at Flemington.

$7,000 on Legarto @ $7 (Sportsbet)

$2,000 on Legarto @ $9 (Neds)

The win was understandably overshadowed by a shocking two-horse fall in the straight but it was a superb performance from the Kiwi filly and another ice cool big-race ride from Michael Dee.

$25,000 on The Red Kite @ $2.40 (Topsport)

This Currie-trained galloper was the subject of a huge betting plunge in the Eagle Farm opener and duly saluted by nearly three lengths in an easy watch for this Topsport punter.

$20,000 on Deepour @ $3.10 (Topsport)

Another blow landed at Eagle Farm, with Deepour recording his fourth win on the bounce in pretty soft fashion.

$10,000 on Benedetta @ $6 (Sportsbet)

Speaking of picket fences, this Warren-trained filly also made it four in a row with a devastating 3L victory in the Inglis Sprint at Flemington.

$10,000 on Sheezasinga @ $5 (Topsport)

This country Queensland sprinter defied a fair old betting drift to lead all the way over the Dalby 800m scamper for 2kg-claiming apprentice Sariah Champkin. A rather ballsy bet.

$10,000 on Heebee Right Mate @ $4.80 (Topsport)

A BM50 on a Heavy 9 at Ballina seems an odd race to attract a five-figure wager but this Topsport was on the money.

$10,000 on Learning To Fly @ $1.85 (TAB)

It wasn't pretty but the leading Golden Slipper hope showed plenty of tenacity to take out the Group 2 Reisling at Randwick.

$4,000 each-way on Communist @ $15/$3.30 (Sportsbet)

Purton worked his magic on this Russian Revolution colt in the Randwick Guineas, turning around a 4.03L defeat in the Group 2 Hobartville Stakes only a fortnight ago.

$7,000 on Cylinder @ $2.90 (Sportsbet)

This Godolphin colt came out on top in a two-horse war with race favourite Red Resistance in the Group 2 Todman Stakes.

$5,000 on Alotofbanter @ $3 (Pointsbet)

They seem to find a length or two when you take unders and perhaps that was the case here, with the Simon Miler debutant winning at Ascot as a $3.80 hope.

$1,000 on Passive Aggressive @ $9.50 (Palmerbet)

It wasn't an easy watch and margins don't get much smaller but the Begg-trained mare arrived in the nick of time to nail Eduardo in the Group 2 Challenge Stakes.

MISSES

$44,640 on Imperatriz @ $2.10 (Sportsbet)

$12,000 on Imperatriz @ $2.40 (Topsport)

$8,000 on Imperatriz @ $2.20 (TAB)

$8,000 on Imperatriz @ $2.50 (Pointsbet)

$3,000 on Imperatriz @ $2.40 (TAB

Yikes. The Kiwi mare looked home for all money in the Group 1 Canterbury Stakes – trading as low as $1.03 with Betfair in the run – but was swamped by Artorius who sprouted wings late.

$30,000 on Aft Cabin @ $2.70 (TAB)

$9,000 on Aft Cabin @ $2.70 (TAB)

$6,000 on Aft Cabin @ $2.90 (TAB)

$5,000 on Aft Cabin @ $3 (Pointsbet)

$21,000 double on Aft Cabin / Jacquinot @ $5.52 (Topsport)

Bookies got the lot here in the Randwick Guineas. The Godolphin colt looked close enough if good enough at the 200m but was plain late, with James McDonald saying he didn't quite stay the mile.

$12,000 on Jacquinot @ $2.60 (Sportsbet)

$10,000 on Jacquinot @ $2.60 (TAB)

$6,000 on Jacquinot @ $2.40 (Pointsbet)

This was a rather ugly watch in the Group 1 Australian Guineas. The gun Price and Kent-trained colt got back off an awkward jump and never really travelled like the winner. He was found to have suffered an internal bleed when inspected post-race.

$50,000 on Sky Command @ $3.10 (Topsport)

$20,000 on Sky Command @ $3.50 (Sportsbet)

Well-backed in the last at Randwick and landed up on the speed but put very little into her finish, beating just two runners home.

$30,000 on Giga Kick @ $4.80 (Sportsbet)

$10,000 on Giga Kick @ $2.70 (Sportsbet)

The Randwick track bias was a Giga Kick up the arse for these two punters – one of which took gross unders. The Everest champion was massive in defeat but he was never winning from where he settled in the run.

$4,000 on Gentleman Roy @ $3 (Sportsbet)

$2,500 on Gentleman Roy @ $3.30 (Palmerbet)

Things looked good for Roy's backers when he opened up a margin on his rivals early in the straight but he couldn't sustain it, fading late to finish fourth in the Group 2 Blamey Stakes.

$3,000 on Soulcombe @ $3.50 (Sportsbet)

$2,000 on Soulcombe @ $3.60 (Palmerbet)

It was tough work for backmarkers at Randwick but this was still a very plain performance by the Melbourne Cup fancy.

$8000 on Economics @ $2.80 (Sportsbet)

$2,000 on Economics @ $2.70 (Palmerbet)

Barrier eight saw this Neasham colt trapped out wide for most of the race but he may not have beaten dominant winner Dashing Legend anyway.

$35,000 on Roots @ $2.70 (Topsport)

Doubt this Topsport punter will be buttering up again next start after this display from the Waller mare. She was only beaten 0.54L but seemingly had every possible chance.

$20,000 on Calm Seeker @ $2.40 (Topsport)

Maybe you're asking for trouble having $20,000 on something in a BM62 at Dalby but it's always easy in hindsight. The Matt Kropp-trained 5YO finished a well-held second in the 1400m affair.

$10,000 on Pinstriped @ $3.80 x2 (Sportsbet)

First-up since finishing down the track in the Golden Eagle, Pinstriped attracted two $10,000 bets but never really looked likely – settling midfield and staying there.

$7,500 each-way on Uncle Bryn @ $8/$2.50 (Sportsbet)

He's been a little plain in two runs back from a break, Uncle Bryn. Shinn found himself back in the field in the Blamey Stakes and the Busuttin and Young gelding made little impression in the run home.

$6,000 each-way on Amenable @ $13/$3.50 (TAB)

Part of the Australian Guineas incident that saw two horses come down, Amenable was a clear forgive run but that doesn't help this each-way punter.

$11,000 on Pounding @ $12 (Topsport)

He keeps fronting up and racing well but the Moody galloper was no match for Nonconformist in the Blamey Stakes.

$10,000 on Akermative @ $8 (Topsport)

Maybe an owners' bet? Maiden galloper Akermative floundered on the Gold Coast Poly track, finishing 9.1L away in a race won by a 130-1 outsider. Ouch.

$10,000 on Rangi Toa @ $6 (Topsport)

Commenting from the cheap seats here but this is definitely a contender for ‘worst big bet of the day'. Poor old Rangi Toa finished in a different postcode in race five on the Gold Coast Poly, beaten 24L.

$10,000 on She's The Gift @ $5.60 (Topsport)

Some big bets were landed at Eagle Farm but not this one, with the Waller mare finishing midfield behind Trevelyan.

$10,000 on Massira @ $2.50 (Sportsbet)

This was a surprisingly bad debut by the Godolphin colt down the Flemington straight after showing promise at the trials/jumpouts.

$7,500 on Red Resistance @ $1.80 (Pointsbet)

The previously unbeaten colt was beaten fair and square by Cylinder in the Group 2 Todman Stakes.

$5,000 on Tycoon Humma @ $15 (Sportsbet)

She's smart on her day but this wasn't Tycoon Humma's day, finishing down the track in a 1000m straight-course dash.

$2,000 on The Big Goodbye @ $3 (Topsport)

The ultra-consistent sprinter led and gave a kick in race eight at Eagle Farm but was run down by Jetty.
