If you want to know how seriously Europe are taking the Ryder Cup, cast your eyes over the field for this week’s BMW PGA Championship at Wentworth.
All 12 of Luke Donald’s team are heading to Surrey as they hone their games for the big showdown against the United States at Marco Simone Golf and Country Club near Rome in just over two weeks’ time.
Of course, this event has always been one of the most prestigious on the DP World Tour and would have attracted a strong field anyway.
But to see Europe’s finest players all converge at the famed West Course - a par 72 measuring 7,267 yards - gives this year’s edition an even greater edge.
One of Donald’s Ryder Cup dozen, Shane Lowry, lifted the trophy last year in a tournament reduced to 54 holes after Friday’s play was cancelled due to the death of Queen Elizabeth II.

🏌️ Jon Rahm ready to claim first prize
Strong cases can be made for most of the Ryder Cup contingent but joint-favourite Jon Rahm looks to be the pick of the bunch as he seeks to win this tournament for the first time.
The Masters champion has played it twice, finishing runner-up on both occasions. The first was in 2019 while who knows what could have happened in last year’s shortened event as Rahm played the third (and what proved final) round in just 62 blows.
Another second place on his last start in England, July’s Open Championship at Hoylake, suggests Rahm has a habit of playing the bridesmaid when he comes back over the Atlantic from his American base.
Far from it. In fact, Rahm has emerged with the silverware in eight of the regular 22 DP World Tour tournaments he’s contested.
That’s a fantastic strike-rate and he’s worth a bet at 7/1 to continue that phenomenal record at a venue he can bully.
🏌️ Matt Fitzpatrick can outscore Tyrrell Hatton
bet365 pit two Ryder Cup-bound Englishmen in a 72-hole match-up and the vote goes to Matt Fitzpatrick to get the better of Tyrrell Hatton.
Hatton had one golden year here in 2020 when taking the title but his other four appearances since 2018 show three missed cuts and last year’s tied 57th.
The combustible Hatton also missed the cut in last week’s Irish Open due to a sluggish 75 on day one.
Fitzpatrick arrives back home enjoying a real uptick in form over the last month. He was third at the PGA Tour’s BMW Championship and runner-up at the European Masters in Switzerland.
In addition, his Wentworth form is far more reliable than Hatton’s: Fitzpatrick has made all seven cuts, twice finishing in the top eight and also adding another pair of top 20s.
🏌️ Thomas Detry for Top 10
Thomas Detry is based on the PGA Tour this year but the Belgian enjoyed recent returns to these shores, taking 13th in the Open Championship and 23rd in last week’s Irish Open.
Combine that with a fifth place in this event 12 months ago and the 30-year-old looks a decent bet at 9/2 with bet365 to finish in the Top 10.
