The NCAA Division I Board of Directors says it is “troubled” by North Carolina’s public criticism of the decision made by a committee to deny an eligibility waiver to Tar Heels transfer receiver Tez Walker, adding some committee members have received violent threats. The statement comes less than a week after North Carolina had appeal efforts for immediate eligibility for Walker denied. The announcement included pointed criticism from both Tar Heels coach Mack Brown and athletics director Bubba Cunningham.

A coalition of professional sports teams in Missouri is backing a new proposal to put the legalization of sports betting on the 2024 ballot. The group is spearheaded by the St. Louis Cardinals also includes the Kansas City Chiefs and all four of the state's other major sports teams. Their plan would allow sports betting at sites run through their sports teams and casinos. Sports betting has expanded rapidly since the U.S. Supreme Court cleared the way for it five years ago. It's now operational in 35 states, with a couple more scheduled to launch in the coming months. But legislation to allow it has stalled in the Missouri Senate.

A former NFL Media journalist is accusing the league of refusing to address what he calls longstanding institutional discrimination and says his contract was not renewed because he repeatedly voiced concerns regarding equity and racial injustice. The allegations were made by Jim Trotter in a discrimination and retaliation lawsuit filed in federal court in New York City. Trotter also cited Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones and Buffalo Bills owner Terry Pegula as making racially insensitive comments and says his concerns fell on deaf ears when he raised them with league executives, including NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell. The NFL issued a statement disputing Trotter’s allegations.

More than 1.2 million tickets for soccer’s 2024 European Championship in Germany go on sale next month. UEFA says seats are priced from 30 euros ($32) at group-stage games up to 1,000 euros ($1,072) for the final. The most expensive seats at the 51 games are in a new “Prime Seats” category that more than doubles the highest prices from Euro 2020. Those halfway line spots selling in December will cost 2,000 euros ($2,146) for the final at Berlin's Olympic Stadium on July 14. Fans of the 24 competing teams will have 1 million tickets retained for them.

England flanker Tom Curry has been handed a two-match ban at the Rugby World Cup following his sending off for a dangerous tackle in the team’s opening pool game against Argentina. Curry was too upright when tackling Juan Cruz Mallia as the Argentina fullback was coming down from a leaping catch. They collided heads and referee Mathieu Raynal initially yellow-carded Curry before it was upgraded to red after a bunker review. A disciplinary panel says the offense carried a sanction of six matches which was reduced to three because of mitigating factors. He only has to serve a ban for the first two matches provided he completes a coaching intervention program.

Breanna Stewart of New York wins AP Player of the Year award for the second straight season. It's the third time she's won the award since the AP first started voting on awards in 2016. She narrowly edged Las Vegas' A'ja Wilson, who captured AP Defensive Player of the Year honors. Connecticut's Stephanie White takes home the AP Coach of the Year award. Indiana's Aliyah Boston is the AP Rookie of the Year.

Tour de France champion Jonas Vingegaard has won the 16th stage of the Spanish Vuelta to move into second place overall behind teammate Sepp Kuss. Vingegaard attacked on the ascent to the finish line of an otherwise flat ride along Spain’s picturesque northern coast. It was the Dane’s second stage victory of the three-week race that finishes in Madrid on Sunday. Kuss now leads Vingegaard by 29 seconds. Their Jumbo-Visma teammate Primoz Roglic is 1 minute, 33 seconds off Kuss’ pace. Roglic won three straight Vuelta titles from 2019-2021. Kuss is the first American to lead a Grand Tour since Chris Horner won the 2013 Vuelta.

A walk-on member of the Alabama football team has been arrested on a charge of second-degree sodomy. Freshman defensive back Antonio Ross was arrested at his home in Weaver, Alabama, after being indicted by a Calhoun County grand jury. The 19-year-old was released from Calhoun County Jail Monday on $50,000 bond. The university said in a statement that Ross is no longer part of the program and was “removed from campus.” Ross did not see action in the Tide’s first two games.

Roy Kidd, who coached Eastern Kentucky to two NCAA Division I-AA football championships in a Hall of Fame career, has died. He was 91. The school announced Kidd’s death on Tuesday in a release after being informed by the family. The legendary coach had entered hospice care last week. Kidd won 314 games with the Colonels from 1964 to 2002 and won I-AA titles in 1979 and 1982. The Corbin, Kentucky, native also led EKU to 16 Ohio Valley Conference titles and achieved 25 consecutive winning campaigns among 37 non-losing seasons.

Prosecutors say Houston Rockets guard Kevin Porter Jr.’s alleged attack on his girlfriend at a New York City hotel left the woman with a fractured neck vertebrae and a cut above her right eye. Prosecutors revealed details of the alleged assault at Porter's arraignment Tuesday. The 23-year-old is charged with felony assault and strangulation in connection with the incident Monday at the Millennium Hilton near the United Nations in Manhattan. He was not required to enter a plea during his brief court appearance. Porter is due back in court in Manhattan on Oct. 16. A message seeking comment was left with Porter’s lawyer.

Tyler Reddick is moving on in NASCAR's Cup Series playoffs. Reddick took advantage of a late caution and fresh tires to win in a two-lap sprint to the finish at Kansas. Two-time Grand Slam champion Simona Halep has been suspended from professional tennis for four years for doping violations. The 31-year-old Romanian had been accused failing a drug test during the 2022 U.S. Open and for irregularities in her Athlete Biological Passport. The International Tennis Integrity Agency says Halep “had committed intentional anti-doping rule violations.” Halep had been provisionally suspended since October 2022. The four-year ban will run to Oct. 6, 2026. She can appeal.

Saudi Arabia has purchased a stake in the Professional Fighters League in yet another example of the oil-rich kingdom using athletics to further increase its influence. Saudi-backed SRJ Sports Investments' deal ensures mixed-martial arts events will take place in that country. SRJ Investments made clear in the announcement that this was just an initial investment. The agreement also allows the PFL to encroach into the UFC's Middle East territory. The UFC regularly holds events in Abu Dhabi, the capital of the neighboring United Arab Emirates.

Cyclist Nathan van Hooydonck has been hospitalized after becoming unwell while driving his car and getting involved in a car crash. Sean Payton's Denver debut was a lot like Nathaniel Hackett's even down to the exact final score.
