Where is Santa Anita?

Santa Anita is located in Arcadia, California, on the outskirts of Los Angeles, with the San Gabriel mountains providing a picturesque backdrop. No course has staged the Breeders' Cup more often than Santa Anita which will be hosting the event for the 11th time - it has been held at Churchill Downs on nine occasions. Santa Anita last hosted the event in 2019 when Iridessa provided the sole European success in the Filly & Mare Turf. Some of the most memorable races at the Breeders' Cup have been at Santa Anita, including Arrogate's defeat of California Chrome in the 2016 Classic and the dead-heat between High Chaparral and Johar in the 2003 Turf.

Who are the key European runners?

Europe enjoyed an excellent Breeders' Cup meeting at Keeneland last year, sending out six winners, and they have a strong team again. The race in which Europe have enjoyed the most success is the Breeders' Cup Turf - there have been 18 European winners of that race this century (including High Chaparral's dead-heat with the US-trained Johar. The raiders look set to dominate in the Turf again this year as they are responsible for the top four in the market, including Derby and Irish Derby winner Auguste Rodin.

The Europeans endured a barren run in the Mile in the years following Goldikova's hat-trick, with six of the next seven editions being won by horses trained in North America. However, Europe have won the last three runnings of the Mile, with the last two sent out by Charlie Appleby who is responsible for Master of the Seas, while fellow Godolphin trainer Saeed bin Suroor sends out 1000 Guineas winner Mawj.

There has also been plenty of European success in the Filly And Mare Turf and there's a good chance of further glory as Inspiral, trained by the Gosdens, and Warm Heart, trained by Aidan O'Brien, dominate the betting.
