Brighton vs Manchester United predictions

Eleven days on from their dramatic FA Cup semi-final at Wembley, Brighton and Manchester United will meet again in the Premier League.

The Red Devils were the team celebrating after that marathon clash in north London. A 0-0 draw after extra time led to a penalty shoot-out, which Erik ten Hag’s side edged 7-6.

Solly March was the only player to miss from 12 yards, with neither goalkeeper able to make a save in a high-quality shoot-out.

It was a painful loss for Roberto De Zerbi’s men, who were the bookies’ favourites heading into the contest.

Brighton suffered a brief hangover, going down 3-1 to Nottingham Forest in their next Premier League outing.

But the Seagulls were back to their best on Saturday as they crushed Wolverhampton Wanderers 6-0 on home turf.

It was a stunning showing from Brighton, who stormed into a 5-0 lead with less than 48 minutes on the clock. The south coast side reminded everyone why they are one of the best teams in England.

Manchester United were also victorious at the weekend, as Bruno Fernandes’ strike earned them an important 1-0 victory over Aston Villa.

The Red Devils are edging closer to a top-four finish but there is still work to do, starting with this clash with Brighton.

Brighton vs Manchester United betting tips

Europa League-chasing Brighton and Champions League-targeting Manchester United will go head-to-head at the Amex Stadium.

Brighton to win – Evens (bet365)

The aforementioned FA Cup semi-final was an even game, but Brighton would probably have triumphed on points had it been a boxing match.

Both teams had 15 shots at Wembley, but the Seagulls edged the expected goals. They had more possession and did most of the probing in extra time.

Losing on penalties is always cruel and Brighton will be highly motivated to avenge that defeat on Thursday.

De Zerbi’s side still have plenty to play for too. They are just three points behind Tottenham Hotspur in sixth place. That position offers a place in next season’s Europa League.

The gap to Spurs (and seventh-placed Aston Villa, who have the same number of points) is eminently surmountable. Brighton have three games in hand on both of those teams. They even have two in hand on Liverpool in fifth.

The Seagulls have a busy few weeks in store, but the fact they have a tangible prize to compete for should ensure their concentration remains undimmed.

Manchester United are not far away from confirming their place in the Champions League, but their away record is far from perfect: Ten Hag’s team have won just two of their last seven matches at opposition grounds.

With the home crowd roaring them on, Brighton can get the better of United.

Both teams to score and over 2.5 goals – 5/6 (bet365)

It was no surprise that the FA Cup semi-final was a low-scoring affair. Last-four clashes at Wembley often are.

The stakes will not be quite so high on Thursday, and both sets of players will feel a little more relaxed.

That is good news for the neutrals. Brighton play some of the best football in the Premier League and Manchester United possess an abundance of attacking talent, so this has the potential to be a brilliant match.

The Seagulls will be full of confidence after their demolition of Wolves last time out. They will take the game to their opponents, as they tend to do against any visitors to the Amex.

Only Manchester City have a higher average possession than Brighton in 2022/23. Meanwhile City and Arsenal are the only teams to average more shots per match – and it is mightily close, at 16 vs 15.9.

United defended with no shortage of resolve against Aston Villa, becoming the first team to deny them a goal since Unai Emery took charge on November 1.

But the absence of Raphael Varane and Lisandro Martinez makes United’s backline weaker, and they will struggle to keep this Brighton attack quiet.

At the other end, though, Ten Hag’s side should have some joy in transition. Bruno Fernandes and Christian Eriksen will look to release the likes of Jadon Sancho, Marcus Rashford and Antony on the counter-attack.

A clean sheet could elude both teams in this one.

Danny Welbeck to score any time – 7/5 (bet365)

Danny Welbeck is a fantastic option for Brighton to have.

He is not as smooth or subtle as some of his attacking team-mates, but the former Manchester United man’s speed and movement helps to stretch the play and create space for others.

Welbeck is not prolific – he has never got into double figures in a league campaign – but the striker can cause opposition centre-backs plenty of problems.

On target twice against Wolves, Welbeck will be raring to go against his former club on Thursday.

His runs in behind will give Luke Shaw and Victor Lindelof plenty to think about, while he is also a target for crosses from out wide.

United have conceded 31 goals on the road this season, the joint-sixth-worst record in the division. Welbeck can take advantage.
