Seagulls ready to swoop in

Manchester United were hapless in their 3-0 Europa League defeat at Sevilla on Thursday night – and given the little time they have to prepare for this FA Cup semi-final, they could see their hopes of a domestic double ended on Sunday.

The Red Devils’ performance in southern Spain summed up their inconsistency on the road this season It was a third defeat in their past five away matches across all competitions and, once again, exposed the frailties at the back.

Boss Erik ten Hag is facing a big selection headache at the heart of defence with Lisandro Martinez and Raphael Varane both on the sidelines, while Harry Maguire is also missing because of suspension.

It is likely that Victor Lindelof will be partnered at centre back by left back Luke Shaw, who will need to be assessed after moving awkwardly towards the end of Thursday evening’s loss, and Brighton will fancy their chances of exposing the duo.

The Seagulls are on a terrific run of form and have suffered just one defeat in their previous nine assignments across all competitions. That sole loss, to Tottenham, was very unlucky given the decisions that went against them.

Albion have won their last two meetings with United, triumphing 4-0 and 2-1. Although both of those victories were under former boss Graham Potter, there is nothing to suggest current manager Roberto De Zerbi cannot extend that run.

The Italian tactician has the Seagulls playing with confidence and fluidity as they remain in the hunt for a top-four finish, and his stock can further rise by guiding the South Coast outfit to a first FA Cup final since 1983 – when they lost to the Red Devils.

Welbeck cast to spoil old club’s dreams

Former players often come back to haunt their previous employers and there is a feeling that Danny Welbeck can do exactly that. With Evan Ferguson ruled out through injury, his position is expected to be taken by the former United man.

The ex-England international, who came through the ranks at Old Trafford, has been in decent scoring touch of late and has notched twice in his past four appearances.

Since leaving United, Welbeck has come up against the 20-time English champions 11 times and he has found the back of the net on four occasions. He has only scored more against three other clubs – West Ham (7), Southampton (6) and Aston Villa (5).

Duo prime card candidates

With United likely to have to deploy Shaw at centre back, the possibility of a booking coming his way has increased. The England international has picked up six yellow cards in the league – the second-highest for his club – while he has also had three cautions in cup competitions.

There is also the chance that the left back will not be at 100 per cent after moving awkwardly on Thursday, but the lack of options in defence may require him to play through the pain for his side and this will also increase the chance of a card.

Joining Shaw in the book could be Brighton midfielder Alexis Mac Allister, who has been receiving rave reviews for his performances this season, but who has often attracted referees’ attention.

The Argentina international has received seven yellows in the Premier League – only Moises Caicedo has more for the Seagulls – and the World Cup winner also has 29 fouls to his name.
