Britain's new whip rules to take effect one month before Cheltenham Festival

The new whip rules will come into force from February 6. Disqualifications will not be applied on raceday. Flat jockeys will be allowed to use the longer version of the whip. The bedding-in period for jump racing will begin from January 9 and end on March 27. Full implementation will take place on the Flat five days before the Lincoln Handicap.

A whip review committee responsible for evaluation of all rides and any necessary sanction will be created. Penalties for offences will include doubled suspensions in major races and disqualification for offenses where the whips was used more than four times above the permitted level.

The use of the whip for encouragement to be limited to the backhand position only. The threshold for acceptable use to remain at seven in a Flat race and eight in jumps race. A whip review committee responsible for evaluation of all rides and any necessary sanction or action will be created.

Jumps bedding-in period is January 9 to February 5, Flat beddings- in period from February 27 to March 26, and Flat full implementation from March 27.
