Bruins playoff picture: Islanders matchup in 1st round likely after Saturday

BOSTON — The four teams competing for the two wild-card spots all won on Saturday keeping the Bruins on target to face the New York Islanders in the first round of the playoffs if the standings hold.

With the best record in the Eastern Conference and the NHL sewn up, the Bruins are guaranteed to face the second wild-card team — likely on April 17.

Mathematically, there are four teams that could be the No. 2 Wild Card. Realistically it’s probably three as Buffalo has a lot of work to do. But the Sabres upended the Hurricanes to stay afloat. The Penguins beat Detroit, 5-1. The Panthers beat the Capitals, 4-2 and the Islanders cruised past Philadelphia, 4-0.
