Carey plotting Oaks ambush with longshot Commando
Pat Carey is going to train Commando Drift in Saturday's $1m Australian Oaks at Randwick. The Mornington horseman won the Australian Derby with Ethiopia in 2010. It's been 10 years since Ethiopia won and 12 years before Cedarberg won up there. Commando Drift broke her maiden at Sale on March 6 but struggled behind potential star Yonce at Flemington last time out.
Commando Drift is going to run out the 2400m of the Australian Oaks. She was strong over 2200m at Sale and her last run behind Yonce was OK at Flemington. Fred Kersley is riding for Pat Carey. He has steered long-priced runners into minor placings in the Newmarket Handicap and Doncaster Mile in recent weeks.
