THE LOWDOWN

CASA PIA

Following gaining promotion to the Portuguese Primeira Liga for the first time ever last season, Casa Pia performed very well and challenged for the top six for much of the campaign. Reliant on excellent performances from goalkeeper Ricardo Batista for much of the season, though, they did eventually fall away and finish in the bottom-half of the table.

‘Second seasons syndrome’ will be a general concern for the club this time around but they have made yet another impressive beginning to the campaign. They come into this on the back of a 1-0 win away at Arouca in their most recent outing, last weekend. That means they have suffered just one defeat in their opening five matches of the 2023/24 campaign.

VITORIA GUIMARAES

In the summer of 2022, Vitoria lost several key players such as Andre Almeida, Rochinha, Marcus Edwards, Ricardo Quaresma and Oscar Estupinan as well as their manager, Pepa. However, after a slow start to the season, Moreno eventually led Vitoria back into the UEFA Europa Conference League qualification spots last year.

However, they were beaten by Slovenian side Celje in the second qualifying round of this competition over the summer. In the Primeira Liga, Vitoria began impressively with three successive victories but they have now suffered back-to-back defeats against Portimonense and Benfica either side of the international break with a loss to Tondela in the cup in between.

THE PREDICTION

A low-scoring encounter is expected. Portuguese football has garnered a reputation for being overly defensive and reactive, leading to lots of matches finishing up with under 2.5 goals and this one is very much an example of what could happen here. Casa Pia have been reliant on defensive solidity, whilst Vitoria often plan on simply edging past teams. Given all of that, under 2.5 goals seems like an inevitability for this one.
