THE LOWDOWN

GIL VICENTE

Gil Vicente, after qualifying for the UEFA Europa Conference League in 2022, endured a difficult campaign last season, being eliminated from that competition early on and then eventually finishing in the bottom-half of the table with long winless runs of form becoming concerning as they fell closer and closer to the bottom three.

Over the summer, they appointed Vitor Campelos, who had recently led Chaves to and then established them in the Portuguese top-flight. Gil Vicente have managed two victories and four defeats in their opening six matches though, and that will be seen as generally underwhelming as they come into this on the back of a 2-1 loss away to Porto.

CASA PIA

Following promotion to the Portuguese Primeira Liga for the first time ever in 2022, Casa Pia enjoyed an impressive campaign finishing in mid-table and, for the vast majority of the season, pushing towards the top six and the UEFA Europa Conference League qualification spots. They struggled in the second-half of the year with a lack of goals and over-reliance on their defensive record.

After six matches of the 2023/24 campaign, Casa Pia have suffered just one defeat and begin this weekend’s round of fixtures sitting in the top-half of the table. They come into this on the back of a 2-1 win at home to Nacional in the group stages of the Taca da Liga, extending their current unbeaten run of form to five matches across all competitions.

THE PREDICTION

Ahead of the campaign, these two would have anticipated very different seasons from one actually happened last year. Gil Vicente expecting an improvement in their form and results as they seek to push back into the top-half, whilst Casa Pia anticipating that their campaign would be about avoiding the ‘second season syndrome’. The two teams are only separated by three points in the table but will generally be feeling very differently. Gil Vicente’s six matches have consisted of 25 goals this season so both teams scoring remains a good bet.
