Cleveland Guardians at Seattle Mariners 2/28/23

The Seattle Mariners host the Cleveland Guardians for a Spring Training game at 3:10 p.m. Tuesday at the Peoria Sports Complex in Peoria, Arizona. The scheduled starting pitchers are Logan Allen for Cleveland and Luis Castillo for Seattle.

Allen started his 2022 season at Double-A but finished the year at Triple-A. He made 13 starts at Double-A, going 5-3 with a 3.33 ERA and 1.10 WHIP. Allen struck out 104 batters and walked 22 in 73 innings pitched. He made 14 starts at Triple-A, going 4-4 with a 6.49 ERA and 1.56 WHIP. Logan struck out 73 and walked 29 in 59.2 innings.

Castillo, a 30-year-old lefty, had a fine season between the Reds and Mariners in 2022. He was 8-6 with 2.79 ERA and 1.06 WHIP over 25 starts. Castillo struck out 167 and walked 45 in 150.1 innings pitched.

Seattle made the playoffs as a Wild Card team, finishing second in the American League West at 90-72, 16 games behind the Houston Astros. The Mariners knocked out the Toronto Blue Jays in the Wild Card round 2-0, then got swept by Houston, 3-0, in the ALDS.

Cleveland went 92-70 last season, finishing first in the AL Central 11 games ahead of the Chicago White Sox. The Guardians swept Tampa Bay, 2-0, in the Wild Card round of the playoffs before losing 3-2 to the Yankees in the Divisional Series round.

Seattle’s offense will still be led by Julio Rodriguez, but the Mariners also have a few new faces with Teoscar Hernandez, Kolten Wong and AJ Pollock joining the club. The Guardians biggest moves this offseason were the signings of first baseman/designated hitter Josh Bell and catcher Mike Zunino.

Cleveland is 1-2, and Seattle is 1-3 so far in Cactus League play. The Guardians have scored 19 runs and given up 21, while the Mariners have plated 12 and surrendered 25. Seattle has played its regular hitters quite a bit in comparison to Cleveland. With the Mariners playing at home and the Indians playing a split squad, we like Seattle to win.
