College football betting, Week 2: Alabama makes a rare trip to Texas, plus five other top picks
The first week of college football betting was mixed. The team won the game of the week with Notre Dame +17 and went 4-2 overall. They missed on Cincinnati and San Diego State. This week's game is Alabama vs. Texas.
No. 1 Alabama is playing a non-conference game at Texas. It's the first time Alabama has played a true non conference game since it beat Penn State in 2011.
Alabama is on the road against Texas. Texas beat UL-Monroe 52-10 last week. The Longhorns were dominant but not utterly so. Alabama is a juggernaut now. The pick is Alabama 44, Texas 17. It's not enough for me to fade the Tide here.
Appalachian State plays Texas A&M at 2:30 p.m. on ESPN2. Texas a&m won 31-0 over Sam Houston State. App State's defense was atrocious against North Carolina. The Aggies offense should be able to get going.
Iowa State is favored by 3½ points at Iowa. Iowa State won last year's game against Iowa by a field goal. The Hawkeyes managed seven points against South Dakota State. Iowa has a tremendous punter and Iowa is a good team.
No. 20 Kentucky plays No. 12 Florida at 6 p.m. on ESPN. Florida won the first game against Utah. Kentucky's defense is not as good as Utah's, but it's not bad either.
San Jose State is playing Auburn at 6:30 p.m. on ESPNU. San Jose beat Portland State 21-17 in the opening game. Auburn won by 395-288. TJ Finley and Tank Bigsby should help Auburn score.
No. 9 Baylor plays No. 21 BYU at 9:15 p.m. on ESPN. The game is a good example of a game with two Power Five teams establishing a pecking order. BYU is trying to stake its claim as a College Football Playoff contender. Baylor lost a lot of firepower from last year's team and is making one of the tougher road trips in college football.
