College football Week 1 winners and losers: Georgia rolls, Oregon flops
Georgia won the season opener 49-3 against No. 12 Oregon. Georgia's team is loaded with NFL draft picks. Oregon's new coach Dan Lanning was formerly Georgia defensive coordinator. The Ducks are not a contender for the College Football Playoff. The Bulldogs are expected to put their opponents into a blender and hit puree. They are going to beat the likes of Alabama, Ohio State and Georgia. It's not the first time that Oregon has been beaten.
No. 2 Ohio State beat No. 5 Notre Dame 21-10. The Buckeyes' running game was key to their victory. New defensive coordinator Jim Knowles' unit gave up just 253 yards overall and 2.5 yards per carry.
Arkansas beat Cincinnati 31-24. It was Cincinnati's first regular-season loss since December 7, 2019. Arkansas quarterback KJ Jefferson threw for 223 yards, ran for 59 yards and had four touchdowns.
No. 25 Houston came back from a 21-7 deficit to beat Texas-San Antonio 37-35 in overtime. The win keeps Houston on track to become this year's Cincinnati.
Brent Venables' first game as coach of the Oklahoma Sooners ended with a 45-13 win against Texas-El Paso. Dillon Gabriel made his debut as a quarterback.
Lincoln Riley's debut as the new coach of USC went well. USC beat Rice 66-19. Caleb Williams, Jordan Addison and Riley were the stars.
Florida upset No. 8 Utah 29-26 in the first game of the college football season. The Gators were picked to finish fourth in their division. Oregon lost to a team picked for the weaker division, too.
UNC scored 34 straight points in the second and third quarters to take a 41-21 lead on Appalachian State. The teams combined for 62 points during the fourth quarter. UNC won 63-61 after stopping the Mountaineers' two-point attempt with nine seconds left. Drake Maye went for 352 yards and five touchdowns.
Jim Harbaugh announced that Cade McNamara will start for Michigan against Colorado State. J.J. McCarthy will get the starting assignment next week against Hawaii.
James Madison made its debut as a member of the FBS with a 44-7 victory over Middle Tennessee State. Todd Centeio had 397 yards of total offense and six touchdowns.
