The Columbus Blue Jackets (16-25-10, 8th in Metropolitan Division) travel to Canada to take on the Ottawa Senators (21-25-2, 8th in Atlantic Division) on Tuesday evening at the Canadian Tire Centre. The Blue Jackets won both of their previous two matchups with the Senators, including a 4-2 victory in Columbus earlier this season. The puck drops at 7:00 PM Eastern Time.

Blue Jackets lose again

The Blue Jackets have lost two of their previous three games, including a 4-2 defeat at the hands of the Tampa Bay Lightning at home on Saturday. The Lightning built a 2-0 lead going into the third period and never looked back. Center Boone Jenner had two goals in the loss for Columbus. The Blue Jackets' offense has struggled recently, scoring two goals or less in three straight.

Key injuries: Center Adama Fantilli is out for eight weeks with a calf injury.

Senators win third straight

Ottawa won their third straight game when they took down the Toronto Maple Leafs 5-3 at home on Saturday. In their first game following the All-Star break, the Senators used a goal and two assists from center Shane Pinto to power past the visiting team. Goalie Joonas Korpisalo turned away 31 Toronto shots to help preserve the victory. The Senators have been winning with their defense, allowing three goals or less in eight of their previous nine games.

Senators interim coach Jacques Martin on the win:

“I thought it was a really good effort. I thought we were slow off the mark, but I think that’s kind of expected after being off for 10 days and not having played.”

Rating:

The Blue Jackets lost their last two matchups with the Senators in Ottawa and they were shut out in one of those two contests. Columbus slipped only two pucks in total past Ottawa goalies over their last two games at the Canadian Tire Centre. Columbus has been dreadful on the road this season, winning under 30% of their games. They have lost two of their previous three games away from their home stadium and they have scored a total of only three goals over their last two. Blue Jackets goalies rank dead last among their peers in save percentage and Columbus skaters rank near the bottom of the league in average goals scored per game, so they may not have the firepower to mount a comeback if they find themselves down early on the road. The Senators have won their previous three games. The trends strongly support a comfortable Senators win in Ottawa on Tuesday.

Take the Senators.

Prediction: Senators -1.5

Full-Game Total Pick

Rating:

The previous two matchups between these two squads went over the goal total, with Columbus scoring a total of eight goals against Ottawa goaltenders over the two games. The Senators have gone over the goal total in three of their previous four games. Ottawa's offense has produced all season, currently ranking 12th in the league in average goals scored per game. The Blue Jackets have pushed or gone over the goal total in three of their previous five games overall and three of four on the road.  Both teams rank near the very bottom of the NHL in average goals allowed per game, so the odds either or both team scores quickly in bunches are high. Most signs point to a higher-scoring affair in Ottawa on Tuesday evening.

Take the over.

Prediction: Over 7 Goals
