Could Ohio State football be on the verge of landing two in-state offensive line targets? Hey, Stephen!

COLUMBUS, Ohio -- In today’s Hey, Stephen! I discuss two Ohio State in-state 2024 offensive tackle targets.

Hey, Stephen: What’s your vibe on the Armstrong twins? They feel like they could grow into a great duo and I’m thinking they could shoot up the rankings when all these major programs offer them. — 440 area code.

Hey, 440: The twins being asked about are Deontae and Devontae Armstrong from St. Edward High School. Deontae is the No. 312 player and No. 25 offensive tackle while Devontae is the No. 352 player and No. 23 offensive tackle. They both earned offers in January and were quite ecstatic about finally doing so. There were three tackles in the 2024 class from the school viewed as Big Ten prospects and these are the two OSU has put its focus on.

The twins are expected to be on campus this weekend alongside already committed three-star Marc Nave (No. 545 and No. 31 interior offensive lineman) in what may one day represent the Ohio side of a bigger offensive line class. Justin Frye did a great job checking that side off the list early during his first Buckeye cycle last spring and looks well-positioned to do the same this time around as well.

The momentum is already there and given their excitement in talking about how hard they worked to earn those offers, it won’t be shocking if they pull the trigger coming out of the weekend should both sides be ready to do so. That would be a big deal. No, their recruiting profiles don’t look that shiny, but both are starting to pile up an impressive offer list that recently added Georgia and Wisconsin.

The concept with Frye has always been about time. He spent the entire 2023 cycle having to work uphill in the impossible task of turning around what had been an otherwise disappointing effort on the trail by his predecessor. That reality is why it was probably never realistic to think he’d pull off anything more than making sure nobody raided Ohio with Luke Montgomery, Joshua Padilla and Austin Siereveld, while adding a long-term development project in Miles Walker as the only national commit.

Fry has already produced Ian Moore as a top-100 national recruit viewed as the top tackle in the class by some recruiting services. Having Nave already committed and potentially closing the deal with the Armstrong twins will once again maximize his time in 2024. The only time around all that extra time could also produce just as much quality with what he brings in on the side of guys who don’t live within state borders.
