Cowboys Next Head Coach Odds, Prediction: Belichick the Favorite if Dallas Dumps McCarthy

There's uncertainty tied to who will lead America's Team in 2024 after a stunning early playoff exit, and we're breaking the market down with our Dallas Cowboys next head coach odds based on the NFL odds from our best sports betting apps.

Mike McCarthy is a lot of things.

First and foremost, he's nobody's underdog. He's also a highly successful regular-season head coach with the Dallas Cowboys. He's been in Dallas four seasons, and three of those campaigns have ended with a shining 12-5 record. That's resulted in two NFC East titles, including the division crown this season.

But McCarthy is also confusing, because right alongside that success in Dallas has been equally consistent failures when it matters most.

A 48-32 drubbing on Sunday evening at the hands of a Green Bay Packers team that entered widely as touchdown underdogs at our best sportsbooks is the latest of three straight embarrassing quick playoff exits. Despite dominating during the regular season, McCarthy's Cowboys teams have recorded just one playoff victory.

Since it's the Cowboys with owner Jerry Jones' itchy trigger finger, and since ESPN's Adam Schefter reported earlier in January that McCarthy could be in trouble if the team flames out of the postseason again, there's been immediate speculation about his job security. The betting market has predictably reacted fast too, and our best NFL betting sites are offering odds on who will be the Cowboys' next head coach if McCarthy is gone.

Let's examine the outlook for the team's head coaching position while looking at the Cowboys next head coach odds from our best sports betting sites.

Favorite to be Cowboys next head coach

Bill Belichick (-175)

We leaned toward the Atlanta Falcons in our Bill Belichick next team odds. They're the leading team on the oddsboards at DraftKings and BetMGM, though "not the head coach of an NFL team" is listed ahead at both books.

However, DraftKings curiously doesn't list the Cowboys despite featuring other clubs without a vacancy, but a field option of "any other team" is being slotted as the front-runner at +125.

That's ahead of sitting out the 2024 season entirely and perhaps heading to the broadcast booth, and it informs how much the market may be shifting due to the murkiness in Dallas.

It seems highly unlikely that Belichick is done coaching. He could choose to catch his breath for a year if the right situation doesn't roll around. And for a time it seemed a team like the Cowboys would absolutely be the wrong fit despite the club's immense talent, as two power-thirsty men like Belichick and Jones would go together like orange juice and toothpaste.

But Belichick has recently made comments that he's open to relinquishing personnel control and focusing solely on coaching. He does the latter at a high level still, as even the spiraling New England Patriots still fielded a quality defense in 2023. However, their offense completely bottomed out while averaging a mere 13.9 points per game, a failure largely rooted in Belichick's poor drafting.

If he can lock in purely on being a head coach, then the Cowboys' job would hold significant appeal. The defensive-minded Belichick can elevate an already talented unit that features one of the league's best pass-rushers in Micah Parsons. But unlike in New England, the other side of the ball is also overflowing with skill, including Dak Prescott and CeeDee Lamb, both of whom are coming off standout seasons while being among the league leaders nearly across the board statistically at their positions.
