Cowboys: Sportsbooks win big after Green Bay upsets Dallas

This season was supposed to be different for the Dallas Cowboys, a team that won the NFC East, got the No. 2 seed and was undefeated at home. Instead, the Green Bay Packers (+7) dominated the Cowboys 48-32 on Saturday night.

And sportsbooks absolutely cleaned up.

Four major sportsbooks — DraftKings, BetMGM, Caesars and Bet Rivers — reported at least 62 percent of the bets and 70 percent of the total dollars wagered were on the Cowboys to cover at either -7 or -7.5.

“Yes, that was a super result for us, no doubt,” John Murray, executive director of the Westgate Las Vegas SuperBook told For The Win in a text message. “A lot of Cowboys tears and Cowboys to Bills parlays.”

At DraftKings Sportsbook, 80 percent of bets and 77 percent of the money were on the Cowboys to win the game outright, many likely involved in money-line parlays tied to other games.

“It’s basically going to make the whole weekend a winner,” Christian Cipollini, a sportsbook trader at BetMGM, told For The Win via text. “Kills any potential parlays, and we had nothing but Cowboys money.”

The Cowboys had been 8-0 straight-up at home and 6-2 against the spread coming into the game, but Jordan Love (272 passing yards, 3 TDs) outplayed Dak Prescott. Green Bay scored a touchdown on its opening drive of the game to go up 7-0 and never looked back. The Packers were up 27-0 at one point in the second quarter.

“I told you on Friday, if the Packers somehow beat the Cowboys, it’s going to make the weekend for every sportsbook in the county,” Thomas Gable, sportsbook director at The Borgata in New Jersey told For The Win. “Monster result.”

DraftKings Sportsbook director Johnny Avello confirmed it was a good game for the sportsbook as well.

Perhaps Carl Johnson, sportsbook director at the Beau Rivage in Mississippi said it best: “We had a great month … today.”

The Packers opened as 10-point underdogs in the divisional round at the San Francisco 49ers next week at DraftKings.
