Cox Plate biggest Australian race for World Pool

Turnover in Saturday’s Cox Plate resulted in the weight-for-age contest becoming the second highest grossing World Pool race this year.

Betting turnover in the World Pool on the Cox Plate reached $HK59.95 million ($AUD12.10 million).

In 213 World Pool races run around the world this year, the turnover figure on the Cox Plate was only bettered by Ascot’s Queen Elizabeth II Jubilee Stakes which grossed $HK66.20 million ($AUD13.36 million).

The international appeal of Australian racing has been highlighted by the World Pool, now boasting three of the top five World Pool races in 2023 in terms of turnover.

The Cox Plate, Caulfield Cup and The Everest have all entered the top five in recent weeks.

“The introduction of World Pool in Australia this year has been one of the major stories Down Under, creating interest and attention like never before,” Michael Fitzsimons, Executive Director, Wagering Products of the HKJC said.

“We have been delighted with the strong turnover figures over the past few weeks, including a new record on Saturday, and I am sure World Pool will continue to prove very popular both in Australia and abroad.

“We are excited to see what will happen on Saturday when many of Australia’s best horses take to Flemington for Victoria Derby Day.”

The World Pool operates on five bet types Win, Place, Quinella, Duet and Trifecta.

All races at Flemington on Saturday will offer the World Pool.
