Coyotes vs Senators Picks, Predictions & Odds Tonight

The Coyotes are on an epic losing streak, and our NHL picks don't think the Senators are quite the spot for them to find a W. But there's another market with even better value — read on to find out more.

The Arizona Coyotes ran their losing streak to 14 games last night in a 4-2 loss to Toronto and have a quick turnaround within the province as they travel to the nation’s capital to take on the Ottawa Senators. The Sens are coming off a pair of ugly losses but are still -220 NHL odds favorites tonight with a 6.5 total that is seeing some Over money.

Even with Ottawa's inconsistencies and a couple of injuries to worry about, the Yotes cannot keep the puck out of their net, and likely goalie Karel Vejmelka has allowed four-plus goals in 15 of his 22 games. Is backing the Ottawa offense tonight a safer move than taking them in regulation at a similar price?

I break down the odds and offer my free NHL picks for Coyotes vs. Senators for Friday, March 1.

Coyotes vs Senators predictions

There's plenty of pride on the line tonight in Kanata as a pair of non-playoff teams will meet Friday night. The Coyotes are riding a 14-game losing streak, are without their best forward in Clayton Keller, and played last night, meaning Karel Vejmelka will likely get the nod in net.

The Arizona No.2 has given up 15 goals over his last three games and has allowed four or more goals in seven of his last nine contests. His game has fallen off a cliff, and betting against the netminder is a great angle tonight in Ottawa.

The Senators are -200 on the moneyline but -130 to score four or more goals on their team total market. During the Arizona 14-game losing streak, its opponent has hit the four-goal market 11 times including in seven straight games.

The Ottawa offense took a hit with the loss of Josh Norris, but this is still a deep offensive team that is coming off two bad losses and is starting to hear a lot of bad news in the media. However, before those two defeats, Ottawa was enjoying a 7-2-1 stretch and posted the same expected goals/60 at even strength as the Leafs in February. Add in a bottom-10 penalty kill from the visitors tonight, and this could be a high-scoring affair.

The juice is a bit at -130, but I do like the chances of Arizona scoring two or more goals, which will keep the Ottawa offense engaged. Over the losing streak, the Yotes have scored two-plus goals 11 times and three-plus goals in half of those losses. A 4-2 or 5-2 game is where I see this one.

My best bet: Ottawa team total Over 3.5 (-130 at SIA)

Coyotes vs Senators same-game parlay

Over 6.5

Ottawa team total Over 3.5

Ottawa last team to score

Again, nothing wild here without the ability to add shots and points. Ottawa has an elite offensive matchup tonight vs. a team mired in a 14-game losing streak and on the second game of a traveling back-to-back. Vejmelka has lost his confidence in net, while Joonas Korpisalo is also a goalie I'd fade.

Ottawa should at least have a crack at an empty net, increasing its odds to score that last goal, which is boosting this modest SGP up slightly.

Coyotes vs Senators moneyline and Over/Under analysis

SIA opened Ottawa at -175, but as of 11 am ET, that had moved to -200. The Over has also moved from -110 6.5 to -120. I’d prefer to take the game Over 6.5 rather than the Sens in regulation or on the puck line.

Ottawa has a great offensive matchup vs. Vejmelka and the Coyotes, who are allowing a league-worst 4.45 goals per game in February. The majority of those goals came at even strength, where tonight’s visitors are allowing 4.23 5-on-5 goals per game over the last 30 days. Vejmelka has also allowed four or more goals in 17 of his last 22 games, and the Over 6.5 is 14-8.

Losing hockey usually translates to Over hockey, and during their 14-game winless streak, the Coyotes are averaging 6.93 total goals per game, while the Over is 8-4-2. Not having Clayton Keller hurts the Arizona offense, but I’d pencil them in for two or more goals tonight. They’ve been held to one or fewer goals just three times over the skid, while Korpisalo has a .887 save percentage on the season and has been playing to those numbers over the last 30 days.

Another reason to like goals in this game is the injuries to the Ottawa blue line. Travis Hamonic is out, and Thomas Chabot and Jake Sanderson are questionable. Chabot was at the morning skate, but losing just one of those guys makes for a thinner blue line. If Sanderson is out, look for Jakob Chychrun to get more minutes and possibly have a bigger role on either power play.

I wouldn’t expect Vejmelka to be the goalie to snap the Arizona losing streak, as Ottawa is just two games removed from a very decent 7-2-1 stretch. Give me the home side to hit the four-goal mark, and I'm expecting Chychrun to see a boost in time on ice. The Josh Norris injury is also giving Ridley Greigg some power-play reps while Tim Stuetzle has moved to PP1, making the duo of him and Claude Giroux one to target for point combinations.
