Damage control Down Under... Australia now outsiders to progress to the Rugby World Cup quarter-finals following shock loss to Fiji

To say it has been a lean year for the Wallabies would be an understatement. With just one win in 2023 thus far, of which came against minnow nation Georgia last week, Australian rugby appears to be on its knees.

Australia's struggles were particularly evident on Sunday, as they lost to Fiji 22-15 in what was their second Rugby World Cup (RWC) pool game. Not only did it mark the first time the Wallabies have lost to the Pacific Island nation since 1954 - it also made their path to the quarter-finals all the more difficult.

Entering the tournament as the favourites to top the pool, Eddie Jones' side are now 11/10 outsiders to progress. They currently sit behind Fiji and Wales, who are 1/6 and 1/3 respectively.

It would be a tough pill to swallow for Australian rugby fans should they not make the quarter-finals, as it will be the first time in history they were unable to do so since the tournament's inception in 1987.

As a result of their shock defeat to Fiji, their chances of making it to the final eight in France will most likely be determined by their result against Wales this Sunday.
