Danny Sabatello vs Magomed Magomedov

Location of the fight: Saitama Super Arena, Saitama, Japan.

Date and Time: Saturday, July 29. 11:00 PM ET main card start

How to Watch: Showtime

Sabatello is fresh off an impressive submission victory over Marcos Breno in April.

Magomedov is looking to bounce back from a submission loss to Patchy Mix last December.

Sabatello can be briefly described as Bellator’s version of Colby Covington. An American wrestler with a solid collegiate career that has what some would describe as a “boring” fighting style that involved mostly all wrestling. He is making a name for himself by the way he looks and the way he talks on a microphone now. All the while backing the words up with his performance in the cage.

“The Italian Gangster” trains at American Top Team with a room full of great fighters to learn from. At the age of 30, he has an MMA record of 14-2 with three KOs and five submissions under his belt.

He is a former All-Big10 wrestler at Purdue and has shown some incredible skill in the Bellator cage. He also won his fight on Dana White’s Contender Series but didn’t earn a UFC contract due to his style.

Magomedov is a classic prototype Dagestani wrestler that has dominated the bantamweight division for his whole career. Outside of two recent losses against the best talent Bellator has to offer, he has been a big problem for everybody else.

He has a win over UFC former bantamweight champion Petr Yan. And he’s the former ACB bantamweight champion in Russia–which is a great organization full of tons of talent. Standing at 5’6”, he will have a disadvantage in reach and size against Sabatello.

No injuries have been reported to Bellator MMA or Rizin in this bout.

Since there is nothing about this fight in any of the Bellator news outlets, we can stick to business and look at how this fight might play out–along with the available betting lines.

There are still not many lines available for this event in Japan, but the betting favorite for this matchup is Sabatello at -160. Magomedov is the +140 underdog. The over 2.5 round total is heavily favored, with odds at -300. This means that oddsmakers expect this one to go the distance.

Before getting to the Sabatello vs Magomedov prediction, we have to look at how this fight could play out technically. Both men are such high-level wrestlers that it’s tough to see which one has the superior skillset.

In MMA, when two wrestlers fight each other, it tends to turn into a striking match. This seems to be from the respect both guys have for their wrestling, but also potentially because they know their striking might be better than their opponents.

One major factor that you need to think about is that this fight is going to be inside a ring, not a cage. MMA wrestling changes a lot when you don’t have a cage to help yourself get back up to your feet.

  • After looking over this razor-close matchup, the official Sabatello vs Magomedov prediction is that Sabatello gets the job done in Japan.

The reason for this pick is that the wrestling will pretty much cancel out, and the fighter that gets the nod on athleticism, size, and striking is Sabatello. Be is going to be able to outstrike and outwork Magomedov to a decision.

Keep your eye on a submission victory as well; Sabatello has long arms and can lock up a dance or guillotine if Magomedov gets lazy on a takedown attempt.
