Detroit Tigers vs. Miami Marlins: Odds, picks, and best bets

Two losses on Thursday in an afternoon doubleheader have likely made the decision for the Detroit Tigers front office to be sellers at next week’s trade deadline.

Just because the Tigers will shed some of their best pitchers to get more prospects, doesn’t mean the season is hopeless though. There could be even better MLB sports betting opportunities in August and September as the team navigates the balance of the season.

On Friday, Detroit will face the Miami Marlins in the first of three games down south in sunny Florida. The Fish are in position to grab a wild card spot, guided by one of the better pitching staffs in the game. Reese Olson will toe the rubber for Detroit, facing Braxton Garrett.

Reese Olson (1-4, 4.53 ERA, 45 K in 43.2 IP) vs Braxton Garrett (5-3, 4.32 ERA, 111 K in 100 IP)

One of the most pleasing surprises of the season has been Olson, who only made his MLB debut in June. Olson has a 45-to-10 K-to-BB ratio in the big leagues, showing his ability to confound enemy batters with movement on his pitches. Given the unstable nature of the Tigers rotation every spring, it seems Olsonis securing a place for next season. Olson may even have a chance to be the Detroit Tigers Rookie of the Year.

You can typically expect a strikeout per inning from Olson, and since the Marlins haven’t seen him, advantage Detroit.

Garrett is a rarity: a breaking ball specialist who throws an overhand, 12-to-6 curveball. His “Uncle Charlie” breaks down sharply the last few feet at the plate. That spells trouble for the Detroit lineup that has too many anxious free swingers or nervous pitch-takers. Guess hitting won’t work against southpaw Garrett, who throws an effective sinker and cutter with lots of movement too. As far as modern pitchers go, Garrett is a workhorse. He’s pitched at least 5 innings in 14 of his 20 starts.

Neither pitcher has much history at all against the opposing team. So, head-to-head historical matchups are not relevant. But, we have a few batters we like to keep an eye on.

Two Miami batters, Luis Arraez and Jon Berti, are hot with the stick. Arraez, who was toying with the .400 mark for a while, has a .368 average in his last five games. Berti, a jack-of-all-trades who finds his way into the lineup regularly, is hitting .462 in his last five games. Both are contact hitters who can hit the ball all over the diamond. Facing an unknown pitcher in Olson, they might simply slap-slap-slap the baseball anywhere.

Riley Greene is hitting .400 (10-for-25) in his last 6 games, with three extra-base hits. No other Tiger batter has the ability to barrel up a pitch than Greene. His hot streak may be an indication of his becoming more comfortable at the MLB level. His future stardom seems assured.

Riley Greene Over 0.5 RBI (+225 from Caesars Sports Betting Site)

If you want to add to your betting bottom line this summer, keep your money on Greene. He’s hitting .311, good for top five in the AL once he qualifies for the leaders.

Odds on this Same-Game Parlay from Caesars MI are +900. A winning $50 bet would net you $450. Cabrera is the perfect foil for Braxton Garrett’s off-speed offerings: Miggy is still capable of making solid contact on pitches with movement.

  • Miguel Cabrera Total Hits Over 0.5
  • Riley Greene Total Hits Over 0.5
  • Jake Rogers Total Hits Over 0.5
  • Riley Greene Total RBI Over 0.5

The Detroit Tigers will face the Miami Marlins in an interleague matchup on Friday, July 28 at 6:40 p.m. ET.
