A dozen sprinters are set to go to post for the final Group 1 of Royal Ascot 2021 but Ed Walker’s Starman will not be one of them. The colt has been withdrawn from the race along with Emaraaty Ana after the ground turned soft following heavy rain at the track on Friday.

Dream Of Dreams, second by a head in the race in each of the last two runnings, is the new market leader, while Irish raider Sonaiyla has also been backed in from 12/1 to 9/1.

Could this finally be the year Dream Of Dreams gets his nose in front in the Diamond Jubilee after missing out by a head in both 2019 and 2020? The latest Diamond Jubilee Stakes odds make him favourite to do so following the withdrawal on ante-post favourite Starman.

Dream Of Dreams is the highest-rated horse among the remaining entries, some 3lb clear of next best GLEN SHIEL. He also scored readily on his seasonal bow in a Listed race at Windsor to prove his well-being. However, Glen Shiel is more than twice the price of the favourite.

Archie Watson’s charge won the British Champions Sprint Stakes on soft going at the track last October beating several of the runners he faces again here. Dream Of Dreams was a beaten favourite in eighth that day, Art Power was fourth, Sonaiyla 10th and Starman finished 14th.

It could be argued that there are often unexpected winners in such end-of-season events, with some horses running on empty at the tail end of a campaign. However, Glen Shiel had also finished second to Dream Of Dreams in the Group 1 Sprint Cup at Haydock a month before.

Among those trading at bigger odds GARRUS could well be the pick. His trainer Charles Hills knows a thing or two about sprinters with the brilliant Battaash under his care and thought the former good enough to run in the Group 1 Nunthorpe Stakes two seasons ago.

He finished last on that occasion, but was gelded and had wind surgery in the aftermath. Off the track for 575 days subsequently, he returned to score at Wolverhampton on his first run of this season.

Garrus narrowly failed to follow up that success when losing by a neck to the progressive Came From The Dark, who would have featured in this race but for injury. Last time out he was second by under three lengths to Dream Of Dreams at Windsor.

The fact that he takes his chance here suggests his trainer believes he is getting better with racing and is capable of playing a part in the finish.
