Dolphins vs. Titans on MNF: Preview, odds and best bets

One of two Monday Night Football games in Week 14 has the Miami Dolphins (9-3) hosting the Tennessee Titans (4-8) in a battle of two AFC seemingly headed in opposite directions. The Titans have lost four of their past five and six of eight, while the Dolphins have a firm grip on the AFC East and would have a first round bye in the playoffs started today.

In this article, we will preview this MNF matchup and hand out some of our favorite bets.

For many reasons, probably not. For starters, Tennessee has been two different teams in Nashville and outside Tennessee. The Titans are 4-1 at home and 0-7 away from home (including a loss in London). The lone home loss came last week to the Colts in overtime.

Additionally, Tennessee struggles against good teams. The Titans are 0-6 (both straight up and against the spread) against teams with a record above .500. Conversely, the Dolphins are 8-0 against teams with a losing record and have yet to lose at home this season. All of this (and more) will make it very difficult for the Titans to come away with an upset victory.

It feels like the sky’s the limit. At least that’s what the matchup indicates. The Dolphins are second in the league in scoring a first in offensive yardage. Miami went for 45 points in Week 13 against Washington. They lead the league in passing (and are second in rushing).

The Titans, meanwhile, have a bottom-third pass defense and allowed two different Indianapolis receivers to go for over 100 yards receiving. That sets up perfectly for the Dolphins and their high-octane attack. Tyreek Hill is hard enough to deal with, and along with Jaylen Waddle makes up arguably the best one-two punch among the league’s wide receivers. The Titans are going to have to pick their poison and could be in for a long night.

We typically tend to avoid spreads this high but because of the aforementioned matchup advantage it would be difficult to envision a high enough number to discourage us from taking the Dolphins and laying the points. Additionally, the Dolphins are 7-1 ATS this season. Tua Tagovailoa is 9-3 ATS when laying at least six points in his career. On the other side, we already mentioned the Titans’ struggles against superior teams. This one is set up to be a blowout.

Spears broke out in last week’s win against Indianapolis, rushing for 75 yards on 16 attempts. That was partly due to Derrick Henry leaving the game. Henry is not in concussion protocol, as was previously believed, and will be out there Monday night. Before last week, Spears had been under this total in four straight games. With the Titans expected to be playing from behind, don’t expect them to feed their backup running back on the ground.
