Dublin Chase odds and predictions: Chacun Pour Soi to earn victory

Day two of the Dublin Racing Festival brings with it another four Grade 1 races on a terrific Sunday afternoon of sport at Leopardstown.

Among the standout races is the Ladbrokes Dublin Chase, a Grade 1 contest over two miles and one furlong that carries a prize of £90,000 for the winner.

There’s an Anglo-Irish feel to the contest, as Paul Nicholls sends over his Tingle Creek Chase winner Greaneteen to tackle the home team in their own backyard. Our tipster previews Sunday’s race with a selection and next best to consider.

Presence of Nicholls a positive move

Paul Nicholls’ willingness to send Greaneteen to Ireland to contest this race – as well as Frodon for Saturday’s Gold Cup – is to be applauded.

The Dublin Racing Festival has quickly established itself as one of the top meetings of the year, in part through its proximity to Cheltenham, but it really doesn't need billing as a support act – the two days of racing stand tall on their own.

That said, it has proved an excellent springboard for Irish raiders before they head to the Cotswolds.

This is a full dress rehearsal and there’s no substitute for the match-sharpness these horses glean from racing here before Cheltenham.

Sandown rematch may favour Chacun

Britain’s champion trainer is, of course, hoping to see Greaneteen winning for the third time in open Grade 1 company in a little over nine months.

He defeated the retiring Altior in the Celebration Chase at Sandown last April and then landed the Tingle Creek at Sandown in December. In between times he was unable to concede weight to his rivals in the Haldon Gold Cup at Exeter on his seasonal return in early November.

Since the Tingle Creek, Greaneteen has been to Kempton at Christmas, playing a distant second fiddle there to Shishkin the Grade 2 Desert Orchid Chase. He was attempting to give 3lb to a bona fide superstar there and although he was beaten by 10 lengths he lost nothing in defeat.

Shishkin has since won a blockbuster Clarence House Chase clash with Energumene. There’s no denying that duo look the standout candidates for next month’s Queen Mother Champion Chase.

When Greaneteen won the Tingle Creek, he did so with today’s rivals Captain Guinness and Chacun Pour Soi behind in third and last places respectively, the latter having started 8/13 favourite.

Jumping is normally a real ally for CHACUN POUR SOI but he was out of sorts that afternoon and the writing was on the wall early doors. He missed coming here at Christmas, an indication connections weren’t happy with him after the Tingle Creek.

His two runs in Britain have been poor, but Willie Mullins’ runner is 3-4 over this course and distance and has won the previous two renewals of this 2m 1f race. In fact, A Plus Tard is the only horse to finish in front of him at Leopardstown.

If he is back to his best, this superb jumper can apply lots of pressure to his rivals throughout the race and he’ll turn the taps on a long way from home. This is a home game for Paul Townend’s mount and that counts for plenty.

Selection: Chacun Pour Soi @ 8/11 with Paddy Power

Dunvegan could go well

On paper Greaneteen is the key danger and if the market leader doesn’t fire, he may well pick up the pieces. However, DUNVEGAN won last month’s Dan & Joan Moore Memorial Handicap Chase at Fairyhouse off a mark of 146 under Bryan Cooper, relegating the useful pair of Blackbow and Castlegrace Paddy to the minor placings as he made it 2-2 this season.

Having mostly campaigned over longer trips in his chasing career before that, he is thriving back down in distance. He boasts figures of 1323-11 at this sort of trip, while he is 0-6 at longer distances.

He’s now up to a mark of 156, seemingly well short of what’s needed to be winning this, but if anything goes amiss for Chacun Pour Soi or Greaneteen, he could be waiting to take advantage.
