Will you look at that, Chicago White Sox starting pitcher enters the 2023 season as one of the top-three favorites to win American League Cy Young behind only Gerrit Cole and Jacob deGrom. Cease came just short in 2022, finishing as the runner-up to Justin Verlander, but KFidds thinks the White Sox righty will win it this year. There’s no doubt that Cease has become an elite starting pitcher, but his high walk rate made me go elsewhere with my pick.

Zo’s going chalk with deGrom and don’t get me wrong, deGrom is the best pitcher in baseball, but I can’t help but think about his injury track record. However, Verlander showed last year that a pitcher doesn’t have to go make 35+ starts to earn a Cy Young award, after he posted a 1.75 ERA in 28 starts. deGrom can make 25+ starts with the Texas Rangers and can very much match Verlander’s numbers.

Mitch and I are going with a few dark horse candidates from the AL West. Framber Valdez finished fifth in the Cy Young Award voting last year with the Houston Astros. Meanwhile, Luis Castillo will be in his first full year with the Seattle Mariners after getting traded to them last summer from the Cincinnati Reds. While Castillo hasn’t taken the jump from being a great starting pitcher to one of the best so far in his career, the right-hander certainly has a devastating mix of pitches that can get him to the next level.
