England vs Chile Prediction, Odds & Picks

England successfully navigated the absence of captain Owen Farrell to open the 2023 Rugby World Cup with comfortable wins over Argentina and Japan. A rested and ready Farrell will be back on the pitch for tomorrow’s clash with Chile (11:45 am ET, Peacock), who might be left wishing his suspension was a bit longer.

Farrell missed the first two games of the World Cup while serving out the remainder of a four-match ban for a bad tackle in a warm-up win over Wales last month.

Without him, the 2003 world champions fell to Ireland and Fiji to close out their pre-tournament slate but kicked off their stay in France with a 17-point win over Argentina and a 22-point win over Japan.

England coach Steve Borthwick won’t be fielding his strongest starting lineup against Chile, who have been outscored in 85-22 in their first two games against Japan and Samoa. Barring the most unlikely of events, England will win with extreme ease, so trotting out most of the team’s top players would be unnecessary.

But in addition to Farrell starting in his return, Billy Vunipola will also get his first start of the tournament after missing the opener through suspension and not seeing any action against Japan.

Will Rotated England Rack Up the Tries?

This is Chile’s first Rugby World Cup appearance, and this will be the highest-profile opponent that they have ever played.

This will almost certainly be a rout, but Chile certainly have displayed some heart thus far in the tournament. They scored the first try against Japan and did the same against Samoa, and they tallied double-digit points in both matches.

It will be a bit more difficult to do that against England, who have allowed just one try in the first two games.

At the same time, we should see England have their highest points haul in a match this year. That won’t take all that much, relatively speaking, as their highest haul in their 11 matches in 2023 came in last Sunday’s match against Japan.

Since destroying Canada (70-14) and Tonga (69-3) in back-to-back matches in the Autumn Internationals in November 2021, England have scored 50+ points just once.

To date, England have scored 60 or more points seven times in 50 all-time Rugby World Cup matches. Most recently, they blew away Uruguay 60-3 in the final match of their disastrous 2015 Rugby World Cup campaign.

England vs Chile Prediction and Picks

Prediction: England to win

Picks: Chile team total over 8.5 points (-105 at Bovada) & England -49.5 (-105 at Bovada)

England won’t score 96 points like France did against Namibia, but they will win this one by a wide margin. Even so, it’s hard not to like the heart that Chile have shown thus far, and I think they will be able to score enough points to hit the over on their team total.
