Lionesses may need extra time again

England reached the quarter-finals without being at their best and have an excellent chance of further progress against Colombia.

But the Lionesses must cope without the suspended Lauren James after she saw red in a moment of madness in the last-16 shootout win over Nigeria.

She was the standout player for England with three goals and three assists during the group stage and had frequently looked like the Lioness most likely to make a breakthrough.

With Beth Mead and Fran Kirby ruled out before the tournament, England have proved to be less potent in the final third during their opening four fixtures.

Bar the 6-1 thrashing of tournament minnows China, the Lionesses edged out Haiti and Denmark 1-0 and then needed penalties to see off Nigeria after a goalless draw.

Sarina Wiegman’s team remain well organised and disciplined defensively, which stands them in good stead having conceded only once in their quartet of World Cup outings.

However, their lack of firepower is a niggling concern and Colombia will be looking to soak up the pressure before pouncing on the counter-attack.

The South Americans, who upset Germany in the group stage, have shown they are capable of resolute defence with two clean sheets in their four matches.

So it is easy to envisage the pair cancelling one another out and low-scoring contests lends themselves to a draw, which looks overpriced at 14/5.

Goals may be hard to come by

Three of England’s four World Cup games have featured one goal or fewer while in their final friendly in preparation for the summer showpiece they were held to a goalless draw by Portugal.

With both of Colombia’s last matches, against Morocco and Jamaica, only realising one goal, there is every chance this could be a quarter-final short on scoring action.

Throw in what is at stake for both teams and punters could profit by backing under 1.5 goals.

England vs Colombia tip 2: Under 1.5 goals @ 8/5 with Paddy Power

England to dominate corner front

Under 2.5 goals has landed in six of the Lionesses’ previous seven internationals – and with James a key absentee, another low-scoring contest appeals.

But England should dominate possession and do much of the huffing and puffing, which should ensure they gain at least six corners. Wiegman’s women have hit that total in three of their four World Cup assignments.

The final aspect of this bet builder is Rachel Daly to have at least one shot on target.

The Aston Villa ace has been deployed largely at left back for the Lionesses, but she has still had five shots on target across the four games, two of which came in the last-16 win over Nigeria.

England vs Colombia tip 3: Bet build– under 2.5 goals, Rachel Daly over 0.5 shots on target and over 5.5 England corners @ 3/1 with Paddy Power
