England to turn up the heat on one-dimensional Danes

Top spot in Group D of the 2023 Women’s World Cup is on the line as England and Denmark, narrow winners of their opening matches, clash in Sydney.

The English and the Danes both struggled to first-game victories, and the likelihood is that both nations will improve for those outings.

Sarina Wiegman’s Lionesses made hard work of breaking down Haiti, eventually sneaking a 1-0 win courtesy of a twice-taken penalty from Georgia Stanway.

As for the Danes, a few hours later they were being hassled and hustled by an energetic China, and it took a late, late effort from substitute Amalie Vangsgaard to earn the European side a 1-0 victory.

Credit probably needs to go to the Haitians and the Chinese, rather than pouring criticism on the winners, both of whom should come on for the run.

Indeed, with England this is very reminiscent of how they started their eventually triumphant Euros campaign last summer, piping Austria 1-0 in their curtain raiser.

The reality is that the Lionesses were incisive in bursts against Haiti, firing off 10 shots on target. The Danes managed just two against China. England are the higher-ranked side and can extend their run of clean sheets while scoring a couple themselves. Back the European champions to net twice without conceding in the correct score market.

England vs Denmark tip 1: England to win 2-0 correct score @ 9/2 with Betfred

Danger girl Daly can turn frustration into delight

England certainly carved out plenty of chances against Haiti and they are blessed with better attacking options than most nations at the World Cup.

Much has been made of injuries and absentees but the likes of Rachel Daly, Lauren Hemp, Alessia Russo and Ella Toone are classy forwards who will get their breaks. It will also be interesting to see if Bethany England gets a chance against Denmark.

Daly is absolutely chomping at the bit after not starting the Lionesses’ first match. The Aston Villa striker scored 22 goals in 22 WSL games in 2022-23 and the consensus was that she would be a definite starter for Wiegman in these finals.

She was certainly unhappy at only coming off the bench against Haiti, though it is entirely plausible that the manager was keeping her back to start what always looked like being the group decider against Denmark.

With that in mind, given her fantastic record over the course of last season and that she fired off three shots when she did come on against Haiti, take Daly to find the net in Sydney.

England vs Denmark tip 2: Rachel Daly anytime scorer @ 7/5 with Betfred

Match-winner Stanway to set sights on Danish goal

England can lay down a marker in Sydney by defeating Denmark with something in hand.

Back England/England in the half-time/full-time market as part of a 9/2 bet builder.

The second component is Georgia Stanway to have over 1.5 shots. The Lionesses’ goalscorer in Brisbane got off four shots on Saturday – and with Keira Walsh sitting deep, the midfielder does have more licence to join in the attacks.

Finally, back England to have over five corners. They accrued seven against Haiti. The Danes conceded four against the Chinese and will surely give away more when they face Wiegman’s side.

England vs Denmark tip 3: Over five England corners, over 1.5 Georgia Stanway shots and England to win both halves @ 9/2 with Betfred
