England vs Ukraine: best Euro 2020 betting odds and tips

After an historic and truly memorable last 16 win over Germany on Tuesday night, England will meet Ukraine in a far more low-profile quarterfinal.

But expectations have now been raised and supporters expect Gareth Southgate and his players to prevail in Rome against lesser opposition.

England will be wary of complacency, given that Ukraine have proved stronger than many thought at this summer’s tournament. They ran the Netherlands close in a 3-2 defeat and edged past a well-organised Sweden side in the last 16.

There is, inevitably, growing excitement among England fans because of the potential route to the final. If Ukraine are beaten, Denmark or Czech Republic will await in the semifinal at Wembley.

The Three Lions are overwhelming favourites, at 2/5 with Betfair, to beat Ukraine, while Ukraine can be backed at 17/2 for those anticipating an upset. England have lost only once against their quarterfinal opposition in seven previous clashes: a 1-0 World Cup qualification defeat in 2009.

With that superiority in mind, England are 1/6 to qualify and 8/1 to go through in extra time should Ukraine push them all the way.

Match results

Ukraine to win in 90 minutes 17/2

England to win in 90 minutes 2/5

Draw 17/5

Ukraine in extra time 35/1

England in extra time 8/1

Ukraine on penalties 14/1

England on penalties 11/1

Ukraine to qualify 4/1

England to qualify 1/6

This will be England’s first game at Euro 2020 away from Wembley, which has been identified as one of the potential challenges. In Rome, without the raucous home support that helped them to victory over Germany, things could be more difficult.

The growing sentiment, though, is that tournament success appears to be a real possibility this summer. Betfair’s “It’s-Coming-Home-O-Meter” has climbed to 32 per cent from nine per cent pre-tournament.

With odds suggesting that this is England’s best chance of winning a tournament since 1966, the expectation across the country is understandable. Football might, and probably should, be coming home.

Former England boss Glenn Hoddle has backed England to come through their quarterfinal convincingly, but warned against the threat posed by Ukraine.

“Ukraine have some match-winners in their team,” he told Betfair. “They know their system and Gareth will have to think about matching them again or he might come up with something different.

“Andriy Yarmolenko is wonderful player for his country. He does well for West Ham coming off the bench, but he looks a different player when he plays for his country: he's confident and wants to play with a swagger.

“Ukraine have a really hard-working side and they have Andriy Shevchenko with his experience of English football. It's not going to be easy, but we have to fancy our chances.

“England can win this without conceding. I do think we'll win and this might just see us take off.

“I don't want to get carried away, but I can see a good win and a 2-0 or 3-0. Hopefully it will be a great way to get through with another clean sheet and Kane to score.”

Players to watch

Raheem Sterling has been England’s standout performer and is now 6/1 favourite with Betfair to win the Best Player Of The Tournament award. The Manchester City man was 40/1 before a ball had been kicked.

Much will be expected again of Harry Kane after he scored his first goal of the Euros in the win over Germany. He is 10/11 to score at any time and 18/1 to net a hat-trick, which would catapult him into contention for the Golden Boot.

For Ukraine, Yarmolenko is an obvious danger man and Manchester City’s Oleksandr Zinchenko has carried his excellent club form into the tournament.

Anytime scorer

Harry Kane 10/11

Dominic Calvert-Lewin 7/5

Jadon Sancho 2/1

Marcus Rashford 15/8

Phil Foden 21/10

Jack Grealish 5/2

Bukayo Saka 16/5

Best bets

Given England’s defensive prowess so far – Southgate’s team have yet to concede a goal – backing them to win and under 2.5 goals to be scored at 15/8 is worth considering. Harry Kane to score first at 13/5 may be tempting too, with the captain likely confident after netting against the Germans.
