Game Preview
England’s most difficult two games in EURO qualifying will come in the opening week of matches. The Three Lions follow up their away match against Italy on Sunday with a home match against Ukraine. England has a solid record against Ukraine, as they have won five of the previous eight matches.
However, the previous meeting between the sides at Wembley ended in a 1-1 draw in September 2012. Gareth Southgate will be without a number of key players for the upcoming qualifiers, including Marcus Rashford, who has been the top scorer across Europe’s top five leagues since the conclusion of the World Cup.
Ukraine should feel confident coming into this match, as the nation has lost just once in the previous three meetings between the sides. However, the most recent match at EURO 2020 did see England run out as 4-0 winners.
Ukraine narrowly missed out on qualification for the World Cup, as they were beaten in their playoff by Wales. However, they have been prominent players in qualifying for the EUROs, as they will be looking to reach the fourth straight edition. In the previous qualifying round, they topped a very competitive Group B after winning six of their eight matches.
Prediction
This isn’t going to be an easy match for England, and we could see Ukraine putting up an excellent fight. However, the Three Lions have too much quality in the final third, and we could see them edging to a 2-1 success at Wembley.
