ESPN's FPI predicts every game on Michigan State's 2023 schedule

ESPN’s FPI is projecting the full results of the 2023 college football season, and the system has predicted every game on Michigan State’s schedule.

The Football Power Index projects the Spartans will make a bowl game this season, but not much success beyond that in the 2023 campaign. ESPN Analytics gives Michigan State just a 1.1% chance of making the B1G Championship Game and a 0.6% chance of winning a conference title. MSU fans that are optimistic that the team can buck those odds can take part in our Michigan Online Sports Betting promos this fall.

Mel Tucker’s team is looking to bounce back after a disappointing showing in 2022. Following an 11-2 campaign in 2021, the Spartans went just 5-7 last season, missing a bowl game.

The 2023 MSU squad will be led by a new quarterback. Payton Thorne, a multi-year starter, transferred to Auburn after MSU’s spring practice and won the starting job for the Tigers. Noah Kim and Katin House are competing to be Michigan State’s QB1.

Even without a starting quarterback named, the FPI favors the Spartans in 7 of their 12 regular-season games. Here is MSU’s chance to win in every game, according to the FPI:

  • Sept. 1 vs. Central Michigan – 90% chance to win
  • Sept. 9 vs. Richmond – 97.7%
  • Sept. 16 vs. Washington – 55%
  • Sept. 23 vs. Maryland – 65.2%
  • Sept. 30 at Iowa – 46.1%
  • Oct. 14 at Rutgers – 74.5%
  • Oct. 21 vs. Michigan – 25.2%
  • Oct. 28 at Minnesota – 44.8%
  • Nov. 4 vs. Nebraska – 72.9%
  • Nov. 11 at Ohio State – 5.7%
  • Nov. 18 at Indiana – 71.9%
  • Nov. 24 vs. Penn State – 34.1%
