THE LOWDOWN

ESTRELA DA AMADORA

The story of Estrela da Amadora is a fascinating one as they have risen to the top-flight of Portuguese football for the first time ever. The Tricolours are a formation of two clubs, Clube Desportivo Estrela and Club Sintra Football, who merged in 2020 and they have gained two promotions in three seasons to reach the Primeira Liga. Sergio Vieira, formerly of Moreirense, Famalicao and Farense, took charge at the start of last season.

The newly-promoted side have started this season with some encouraging performances, albeit they have suffered defeats in both of their matches. They lost 1-0 at home to Vitoria on the opening day of the campaign but were down to ten men after just 20 minutes of that match and then restricted reigning champions Benfica to just a 2-0 win at the Estadio da Luz last weekend with both goals coming late on in the match.

ESTORIL

Estoril were promoted back to the Portuguese top-flight in 2021 and they enjoyed an impressive return, under the management of Bruno Pinheiro, narrowly missing out on a top six finish and UEFA Europa Conference League qualification. Last season, they were a little more underwhelming as they finished firmly in mid-table and they have moved on from manager Nelson Verissimo to former Chaves boss Alvaro Pacheco.

Pacheco performed very well with Chaves and will be hoping to challenge for the top six with Estoril. The Canaries have begun the 2023/24 Primeira Liga campaign with entertaining results. Firstly they took the lead three times away to Arouca but eventually lost the game by four goals to three but they followed that up with a comfortable and impressive 2-0 defeat of Rio Ave in their most recent outing, last weekend.

THE TEAM NEWS

ESTRELA DA AMADORA

Despite losing their opening two matches, Estrela da Amadora have put in some solid performances and Sergio Vieira is blessed with a fully fit and available squad so an unchanged eleven would appear most likely for this weekend.

PREDICTED XI (5-4-1): Bruno; Hevertton, Omurwa, Gaspar, Mansur, Reis; Ronald, Cordeiro, Vito, Jaba; Tavares

UNAVAILABLE:

QUESTIONABLE:

ESTORIL

Alvaro Pacheco’s side won their previous match by two goals to nil and, given there are no fresh injuries or suspensions, they will be expected to name an unchanged side for this weekend’s encounter at newly-promoted opposition.

PREDICTED XI (4-2-3-1): Figueira; Feltes, Vital, Mangala, Araujo; Pavlic, Holsgrove; Guitane, Marques, Tavares; Cassiano

THE PREDICTION

Newly-promoted Estrela da Amadora have, as mentioned, provided some competitive contests against two sides that finished in the top six last season, including the reigning champions, so judging them purely on the fact of no goals scored and back-to-back defeats would be harsh and disingenuous. Estoril will be hoping to be one of those sides to be challenging towards the top six this season and, despite Estrela’s stubbornness, remain slight favourites, even away from home. Regardless of the match result, though, under 2.5 goals seems inevitable for this contest; despite Estoril’s fun start to the campaign.
