FCS Football Review: Week 2 Takeaways

NCAA pushed the FCS championship game back one more day in January. Eastern Kentucky, Holy Cross, UIW and Weber State won over the Football Bowl Subdivision this weekend.

Eastern Kentucky won 59-57 at Bowling Green in seven overtime. It was the first win for the ASUN program since 2014. Bethune-Cookman beat D-II Virginia State in eight overtime in 1998.

Holy Cross and UIW have won over FBS opponents for the second consecutive season. Matthew Sluka's "Hail Mary" pass to Jalen Coker is the play of the year.

The Citadel has the most overtime wins among FCS programs since the tie-breaking extra session was instituted for D-I regular-season games in 1996. Colby Kintner's 39-yard field goal won the game against defending Southern Conference champion ETSU 20-17.

Fordham beat Monmouth 52-49 in a game that had over 1,400 offensive yards (1,419) and 100 points (101). Fordham’s Tim DeMorat passed for 452 yards and matched the school record with six touchdown passes. Monhurst”s Jaden Shirden rushed for a school-record 299 yards on only 12 carries.

Rick Santos is 2-0 at New Hampshire and the Wildcats are atop the CAA standings. Dylan Laube carried the ball 32 times for 202 yards and three touchdowns against the Great Danes. Wofford has suffered back-to-back shutout losses for the first time since 1984.

Jackson State beat Tennessee State 16-3 in the Southern Heritage Classic. North Carolina A&T lost 43- 3 to North Dakota State. Alabama State became UCLA's first-ever FCS opponent, losing 45-7 to the Vikings.

North Dakota beat Northern Iowa 29-27 in the MVFCS game. Tommy Schuster completed 20 of 23 passes for 275 yards and two touchdowns with one interception.

Montana (Big Sky) and South Dakota State (MVFC) are tied at one win apiece in the Big Sky-MVC Challenge. Montana beat South Dakotas 24-7, while SDSU beat UC Davis 24, 22.

Weber State's defense was outstanding in a 35-7 win at Utah State. Lindenwood won 21-20 at Houston Baptist. Demeatric Crawford's five TD passes powered Youngstown State past Dayton 49-16. Colgate went from falling at Stanford in Week 1 to beating Maine 21 -18. Austin Peay has posted back-to-back shutouts for the first time since 1964. Samford managed only 128 offensive yards in being shut out 33-0 at defending FBS national champion Georgia. Jacksonville State became the 1st 3-1 team in FCS, winning 34-3 at Murray State, while Sam Houston fell 10- 3 at home to Northern Arizona. Eastern Washington’s potent offense was held to 87 passing yards and 187 total offensive yard in 70-14 loss at Oregon. Montana State”s top four running backs have sustained injuries.
