FIFA Women’s World Cup quarterfinal odds and schedule: France, Australia set for rematch

Inside The Star

Later this week, the quarterfinals of the Women’s World Cup will begin in New Zealand and Australia — but the U.S. Women’s National Team won’t be part of it.

The pregame narrative: The USWNT were eliminated by Sweden in the round of 16, but the Swedes are underdogs again in their upcoming match against Japan. Meanwhile, England is the heaviest favourite of this round and France is seeking vengeance against Australia.

Women's World Cup schedule

The quarterfinals will take place over a three-day span from Aug. 10-12.

The first game — Spain vs. Netherlands — takes place at 9 p.m. ET on Thursday. The other three matches will start prior to 7 a.m. ET on their respective days.

Will this finally be the coming-out party for two-time reigning Ballon d’Or winner Alexia Putellas?

She is still goalless through four games, although Putellas only played 14 minutes (off the bench) in a 5-1 blowout over Switzerland in the round of 16. It must be nice for La Roja to know they can fill the net with or without her.

Spain has scored the second-most goals in the tournament (13) but has also conceded five goals, which is the most among the six teams that are currently through to the quarterfinals.

The market for over 2.5 goals is priced at +108, and that’s a total the Spaniards have cleared in all four of their matchups so far.

As for the Netherlands, don’t count them out just because the odds aren’t in their favour. The Orange Lionesses finished second at the 2019 Women’s World Cup in France.

From a 33-to-1 outsider at the start of the tournament to favoured status in its quarterfinals matchup, Japan has come a long way.

Nadeshiko Japan leads the tourney with a +13 goal differential — as well as 14 total goals — and is rostering the current Golden Boot leader in Hinata Miyazawa.

Both teams in this matchup boast impressive World Cup victories, as Japan dominated Span in the group stage and Sweden snuck by the USA in the round of 16.

Keep in mind that while Sweden has only yielded one goal, their expected goals allowed (per Football Reference) sits much higher at 3.6.

Australia has done it before. Can they do it again?

The Aussies knocked off France, 1-0, in their final friendly before the World Cup began. Now the tournament co-hosts will try to keep their title hopes alive as +255 underdogs.

France opened its tourney with a scoreless draw against Jamaica, but goals have been flowing since then. Each of Les Bleues’ past three games has gone over 2.5 goals, which is priced at +130 for this matchup.

England, the favourite to win, will face Colombia as the Lionesses look to preserve a clean sheet for the 15th time in 17 matches this year.

Las Chicas Superpoderosas already have one impressive upset win in the World Cup, besting Germany in the group stage.
