Fiji vs Georgia Prediction, Odds & Picks

After defeating Australia for the first time in 69 years, Fiji have one foot in the 2023 Rugby World Cup quarterfinals. Saturday could prove to be an unforgettable day for the Flying Fijians, who take on Georgia in Bordeaux (11:45 am ET, CNBC/Peacock).

Thanks to their 22-15 win over the Wallabies in Saint-Etienne a dozen days ago, Fiji have the head-to-head tiebreaker over Australia. So, if they are able to secure a bonus-point win over Georgia, they will be certain of reaching the Rugby World Cup quarters for the first time since 2007, unless Portugal somehow pull off upsets of both Australia and Fiji and pick up a bonus point along the way.

2023 Rugby World Cup Pool C Standings

  • 1. Wales – 14 points (bonus-point win vs Fiji, bonus point win vs Portugal, win vs Australia)
  • 2. Fiji – 6 (two bonus-point loss vs Wales, win vs Australia)
  • 3. Australia – 6 (bonus point win vs Georgia, bonus-point loss vs Fiji, loss vs Wales)
  • 4. Georgia – 2 (lost to Australia, tied Portugal)
  • 5. Portugal – 2 (lost to Wales, tied Georgia)

As it stands, Fiji are on course to face off with England–who they defeated for the first time ever in a World Cup warm-up match in August–in the quarterfinals in Marseille on October 15.

There’s still a lot to do before then, however, and both Georgia and Portugal will no doubt aim to make them work for their place in the last eight.

Could Complacency Creep in for Fiji?

With almost two weeks between their win over Australia and tomorrow’s clash with Georgia, could there be a slow start for Fiji at the Matmut Atlantique?

It’s certainly possible, but the Flying Fijians have been playing inspired, confident rugby for the past couple of months, and it is difficult to see them dropping off just because of the opposition.

Fiji swept through the Pacific Nations Cup with double-digit wins over Tonga, Samoa, and Japan, then wrapped up tournament prep with a respectable showing in a loss to France and a historic win over England.

The confidence from those performances and results has carried over into the World Cup, even after losing flyhalf Caleb Muntz for the tournament due to a knee injury suffered in training days before their opener against Wales.

As much in disarray as Australia are at the moment, it doesn’t diminish how impressive Fiji were in their win over the Wallabies, their first since June 26, 1954. Australia may have wound up with a losing bonus point, but Fiji were in control most of the way.

The last time these two teams met, Georgia pulled off a major upset but were denied by a late converted try in a 15-15 draw in November 2021.

Of the players who were in the starting lineup for the Flying Fijians that day, five started against Australia, while four more were on the bench.

However, that was during Vern Cotter’s tenure as head coach, which included only three wins in ten matches.

Under coach Simon Raiwalui, who took over as head coach in February of this year, Fiji have won five and lost two and are now eighth in the world rankings after sitting 14th when Cotter resigned in February.

Fiji vs Georgia Prediction and Picks

Prediction: Fiji to win

Picks: Fiji -18.5 (-117 at MyBookie) & 2nd half to be the highest scoring half (-121 at Bovada)

With the quarters in their sights, I don’t foresee Fiji falling off, even if Georgia isn’t at the level of Wales or Australia talent-wise.
