Reasoning

Wednesday’s college football action takes us to the bottom of the Conference USA standings, where the Florida International Panthers take on the Sam Houston State Bearkats. Neither team has a conference win, and times are getting desperate. Sam Houston State is one of two remaining teams in the nation without a win, the other being Nevada. This will be only the second home game for the Bearkats, something that is hard to imagine this late into the season. What should we expect in this game?

SHSU is averaging an abysmal 11 points per game on offense, and thus it is surprising to see the Bearkats listed as the favorite. But they played Liberty to a 21-16 decision, and they held their own against both BYU and Air Force in the early part of the season, especially on the defensive side of the ball. There is reason to think that the Bearkats are not as bad as their winless record or their 11-point average (what a strange sentence!). FIU, on the other hand, just got owned at home by UTEP in a game when the Miners were missing their quarterback and FIU was a home favorite. FIU was down 21-0 in the first quarter and never looked to be in the game. Something is very wrong with the Panthers right now. In a game with a very low point total (41) and a winless team favored, I am going to play the winless Bearkats to get their first W of the season. I think they can cover in what is likely to be an ugly game all the way around.

Sam Houston State -5 (-110) available at time of publishing. Playable at that number.
