Ohioans wagered more than $1.1 billion on sports betting in January, the first month sports gambling was legal in the state. The Ohio Casino Control Commission released the data Tuesday, noting the bets resulted in $208.9 million in revenue for sportsbooks across the state. The vast majority of wagers were placed online, officials said, with 16 operators accounting for $205 million in revenue. Ohio’s 14 in-person, retail sportsbooks reported $3.2 million in revenue, while the state’s four casinos showed $86 million in gaming revenues for January. The state taxes sports gambling revenue at 10%.

The women's Pac-12 Conference Tournament gets underway Wednesday in Las Vegas with four first-round games. The conference has a chance to place at least eight teams in the NCAA Tournament. Only the Southeastern Conference in 1999 and 2012 and the Big 12 in 2008 have placed as many as eight teams in the field. No league has sent nine teams. The Pac-12 has five teams in the women's AP Top 25. Utah is ranked third and Sanford sixth. Both teams received No. 1 seeds in the last top 16 reveal by the NCAA women’s basketball committee.

Kurt Busch is trying to move on with his life after his NASCAR career was prematurely curtailed from the lingering effects of a concussion. Busch was injured in a brutal wreck during qualifying last summer at Pocono Raceway. Busch instead is now a de facto consultant for his old 23XI Racing team and Toyota. He’s chatted up sponsors and is doing the grunt work needed to make the gears turn on the team co-owned by Michael Jordan. He just can’t race.

Noah Song has no illusions of the challenges ahead as he approaches the end of his first week of spring training since joining the Philadelphia Phillies from the U.S. Navy. Dressed in white pinstripe pants and a red BP jersey with 52 and Song on it, the 25-year old right-hander threw 25 pitches during his second mound session since reporting to camp last Thursday. Song called it a work in a progress and far from perfect, but is looking to improve everyday. A transfer to the Navy reserves allowed Song to play pro baseball for the first time since 2019.

Alabama coach Nate Oats apologized and took responsibility for allowing freshman forward Brandon Miller to continue going through a pat-down during pregame introductions. Oats reiterated that the teammate's pat-down of Miller won't continue. Miller had received the pat-down upon his introduction well before the Jan. 15 arrest of then-teammate Darius Miles and another man on capital murder charges in the shooting death of 23-year-old Jamea Harris. Then, police testimony in that case last week accused Miller of delivering Miles’ gun.

FIFA’s choice of Brazilian supermodel Adriana Lima as its first global fan ambassador is not popular with a leading advocate for women's soccer. Five months before the Women’s World Cup starts the appointment of the former Victoria's Secret runway model was described as “tone deaf” by the former leader of FIFA's women’s soccer task force. Australian former FIFA official Moya Dodd asks: “Seriously, FIFA, is this the fan engagement ambassador we need as the (Women’s World Cup) approaches?” Dodd helped the bid campaign of tournament co-hosts Australia and New Zealand. She adds she is “honestly baffled by the marketing strategy."

Thailand’s ambassador to the U.K. has joined others for a funeral service for one of the 12 boys rescued from a flooded cave in Thailand in 2018, 17-year-old Duangphet Phromthep, who died this month in England. Phromthep, known as Dom, was found unconscious in his room on Feb. 12 at Brooke House College Football Academy in Leicestershire, central England. He died in hospital two days later. His cause of death was not known but police said it was not believed to be suspicious. The Royal Thai Embassy said the ambassador attended Tuesday’s funeral along with teachers and students at Dom’s school, the CEO of Leicester City Football Club and others. The embassy said Buddhist monks performed rites at the ceremony.

NASCAR finally has some company in the racing world with Formula One and IndyCar both kicking off their seasons. The stock car world hopes the early season isn't a sign of things to come with Kyle Busch making his ride with Richard Childress Racing look like a car to beat so far. Max Verstappen begins his second consecutive championship defense in the F1 opener in Bahrain, and Will Power will defend his IndyCar title on the streets of St. Petersburg, Florida.

All-Star slugger Manny Machado and the San Diego Padres finalized a $350 million, 11-year contract, the fourth-largest in baseball history. The deal will keep Machado with the Padres through 2033 and is the latest contract handed out by big-spending owner Peter Seidler. Machado, who has helped turn the Padres into a World Series contender, finished second in the NL MVP race last year. He’ll anchor a star-laden lineup that includes Xander Bogaerts, Juan Soto and Fernando Tatis Jr., who can return on April 20 from an 80-game suspension for performance-enhancing drugs.

The NBA is inviting seven companies, including two international firms, to present new technology to league executives, partners and investors at Summer League in Las Vegas later this year. The companies were revealed Tuesday. They were selected through the league’s Launchpad program that is designed to identify and develop new technology to be used on and off the floor.

The IndyCar season opens this weekend on the downtown streets of St. Petersburg, Florida. It will feature a whopping 27 full-time entries and a renewed focus on growing the series. The plan includes a television program designed around the build-up to the Indianapolis 500 that is expected to showcase the stars of IndyCar and the close racing. IndyCar is also touting this season as its most environmentally sustainable season in series history.

Not having a cut is one of the sticking points for LIV Golf getting world ranking points. Padraig Harrington and Russell Knox can appreciate the importance for different reasons. Harrington says he feels the stress of making the cut, especially when he comes over from 54-hole PGA Tour Champions events. Knox is feeling the strain of trying to qualify for the PGA Tour postseason. In other golf developments, the Champions Tour this week has Kapalua club pro Michael Castillo. A longtime club pro and cancer survivor, he didn't play his first PGA Tour event until last month at the Sony Open at age 60.

The Carolina Hurricanes have acquired winger Jesse Puljujarvi in a trade with the Edmonton Oilers. Carolina sent the rights to 22-year-old unsigned draft pick Patrik Puistola to Edmonton in the swap of young Finns. The Hurricanes hope to unlock Puljujarvi's offensive production after the No. 4 pick in 2016 has put up just 117 points in 337 NHL regular-season and playoff games. The move helps replace what Carolina expected of Max Pacioretty before the winger re-tore his right Achilles tendon. Edmonton clears $3 million off the salary cap in preparation for more moves before the trade deadline Friday.

The Green Bay Packers are still waiting for Aaron Rodgers to decide whether or where he'll play next season. Other teams at the NFL's annual scouting combine seem to be jockeying for other quarterbacks. As coaches and general managers kicked off one of the league's biggest offseason events, the discussions took off. Marcus Mariota was cut, Derek Carr became a hot commodity, and the Tampa Bay Buccaneers were expected to discuss how they'll replace the retired Tom Brady.

An oblique injury will keep Japanese outfielder Seiya Suzuki out of the World Baseball Classic. It also jeopardizes his status for opening day with the Chicago Cubs. Cubs manager David Ross said Tuesday that the Suzuki suffered a “moderate” strain to his left oblique while swinging during batting practice over the weekend. Suzuki was on Japan’s roster for the 2017 WBC and played on Japan’s gold-medal team in the one-year delayed Tokyo Olympics. Ross said there’s still hope that the 28-year-old Suzuki can be ready for the team’s regular season opener against the Brewers on March 30. But he also said the Cubs wouldn’t rush his return.

Tampa Bay Rays pitcher Tyler Glasnow is expected to miss six to eight weeks because of a left oblique strain. The 29-year-old right-hander was hurt while throwing batting practice on Monday. He rejoined the Rays rotation last September after missing nearly 14 months because of Tommy John surgery. Tampa Bay said an MRI detected a grade 2 strain. The Rays’ opening day starter two years ago, Glasnow had Tommy John surgery on Aug. 4, 2021. The 6-foot-8 right-hander went 5-2 with a 2.66 ERA in 14 starts in 2021.

Fernando Tatis Jr. was set to play his first game for San Diego after missing the 2022 season because of an injury and drug suspension. Tatis was in the lineup as the designated hitter and batting second in an exhibition against San Francisco. Tatis broke his left wrist on Oct. 3, 2021, and was on the cusp of returning when he was suspended for 80 games last Aug. 12 following a positive test for Clostebol, an anabolic steroid. Tatis blamed his positive PED test on a cream he said he took for ringworm.

Four former Tennessee football staffers have received multi-year show-cause penalties for their roles in recruiting violations under agreements with the NCAA. The NCAA said the four had reached agreements with the enforcement staff that include show-cause penalties ranging from 3-5 years, making it difficult for them to get other college jobs during that time. The NCAA did not identify the former staffers who worked under former coach Jeremy Pruitt. Pruitt, Tennessee and others await the final ruling from the Division I Committee on Infractions.

The Detroit Red Wings signed defenseman Jake Walman to a three-year, $10.2 million contract three days before the NHL trade deadline. Detroit is in contention for a wild card and potentially has a chance to make the playoffs for the first time since 2016. The 27-year-old Walman is in his second year with the Red Wings and is having the best year of his career. He had five goals and 10 points in 40 games entering Tuesday night’s game at Ottawa. The Toronto native had 10 points in 51 games last season, mostly playing in St. Louis.

The rematch between undisputed women’s boxing champions Katie Taylor and Amanda Serrano won’t take place as planned on May 20 because of an injury to Serrano. The two were set to meet in Ireland in what would have been Taylor’s first time fighting in her home country as a pro. But the promotional companies for the fighters announced Tuesday that Serrano had sustained an unspecified injury. They will attempt to reschedule at a later date. Taylor edged Serrano by split decision last April in the first women’s boxing match to headline Madison Square Garden. Plans for the rematch were announced last month.

San Diego All-Star pitcher Joe Musgrove will be sidelined for at least two weeks after breaking his left big toe in a weight room accident, putting in question whether he will be ready for the start of the season. Musgrove was hurt Monday, Padres manager Bob Melvin said, Once Musgrove is cleared to throw, he will have to build up arm strength and endurance. . A 30-year-old right-hander, Musgrove went 10-7 with a 2.93 ERA last season and is starting a $100 million, five-year contract.

Second-seeded Zhang Shuai has pulled out of the ATX Open in Austin, Texas, because of an illness. Another seeded player, No. 6 Lauren Davis, also withdrew Tuesday, citing an abdominal injury. Both were replaced by women who lost in the final round of qualifying. Erika Andreeva took Zhang’s place in the main draw while Nao Hibino took Davis’ spot. They’re the latest withdrawals from the bracket at the debut of women’s professional tennis in Austin. Emma Raducanu, the 2021 U.S. Open champion, dropped out of the field before play began because of tonsillitis.

The Washington Commanders are denying the contents of a newspaper report about the team's sale process. The team said in a statement that a story published by The Washington Post is “simply untrue.” Citing anonymous sources, the Post reported that owner Dan Snyder and his attorneys have demanded that NFL owners and the league indemnify him against future legal liability and costs if he sells the team and threatened to sue if not. The Post said Snyder also wants the findings of an investigation into him kept private and added that the demands angered owners and renewed discussion about possibly taking a vote to remove Snyder. He and wife Tanya began the process of looking to sell part or all of the team in November.

Spain’s anti-violence commission has proposed a fine of $4,200 and a 12-month ban from stadiums for the fan who racially insulted Vinícius Júnior in a Spanish league match. The punishment is expected to be imposed by authorities against the fan who is accused of calling the Real Madrid forward a monkey during the game at Mallorca this month. The fan may also face criminal charges. He was identified by club security officials and is also believed to have insulted Villarreal player Samu Chukwueze in another match. Both Vinicius and Chukwueze are Black.

A person familiar with the situation says the New York Giants have told Kenny Golladay and his agent he will be released on March 15 after two horrible seasons. The person spoke to The Associated Press on condition of anonymity Tuesday because the team doesn’t plan to announce the move until it is official. The date is the start of the 2023 NFL season. The move was expected after Golladay caught 43 passes and one touchdown in his time with the team after signing a four-year, $72 million contract. The only question was when it would happen.

LIV Golf started its season when the PGA Tour's biggest stars would be taking the week off. But then the PGA Tour showed at the Honda Classic that it can still deliver when least expected. Chris Kirk was a happy tale at Honda. He is a recovering alcoholic who had gone nearly eight years without winning. Over in Mexico, Charles Howell III won the LIV Golf opener. Howell's narrative was that he never won enough on the PGA Tour. He has 3 wins in 607 tries. Howell won $4 million. That's more than his last 95 starts combined on the PGA Tour.

No. 10 Notre Dame and No. 13 Duke made fast climbs to become the top two seeds in this week's women's Atlantic Coast Conference Tournament. The Fighting Irish claimed the regular-season title under third-year coach Niele Ivey. They were picked to finish fourth. The Blue Devils finished second under their third-year coach in Kara Lawson. They were picked to finish seventh. The five-day tournament also features eighth-ranked Virginia Tech and No. 18 North Carolina. Play begins Wednesday in Greensboro, North Carolina. The top four seeds receive byes into Friday's quarterfinals. The title game is Sunday.

Bob Richards, a two-time Olympic pole vault gold medalist who also became an ordained minister, has died. He was 97. USA Track and Field confirmed his death. His son, Brandon, wrote in a social media post that his father died Sunday "peacefully surrounded by loved ones.” Richards competed at the 1948, ’52 and ’56 Olympics in the pole vault. He won a bronze medal in his first Olympic go-around, followed by back-to-back gold medals. The versatile athlete known as the “Vaulting Vicar” also competed in the Olympic decathlon in 1956.
