Georgia Tech Women’s Basketball: Season Overview

Georgia Tech is returning six players and welcoming seven new ones to the team. Nerea Hermosa and Eylia Love are the only starters from last year's team that is not returning. Sarah Bates left for West Virginia.

Georgia Tech Women's Basketball has a new coach, and a lot of new players. The team has much to figure out in terms of how their offense will gel and if they can keep the stout defense from last season. Tonie Morgan has already made an offensive impact against Georgia State and Kennesaw State. Cameron Swartz and Bianca Jackson are the key cogs for the team. The biggest contrast between the offense and the defense is what the Tech team is built for.

Cameron Swartz is a 5th-year grad transfer from Boston College. She played 82 games for the Eagles and was their leading scorer. Nell Fortner showed interest in Swartz after they played each other last season. Swattz is 5'11 and has height and length for a smaller team.

Bianca Jackson is a 5th-year grad transfer from South Carolina to Florida State. Bianca is the daughter of two collegiate head basketball coaches. She played in 68 games at South Carolin and 45 games as a Seminole. In her first season at FSU, Biancia was red-shirted due to ACC transfer regulations.

Hermosa is a senior and is the only Jacket to finish last season shooting over 50% from the field and scoring 338 points. She started every game for Tech last year. Hermosa takes Cubaj’s title of most minutes played by a Jacket for an active player at 2,354 minutes going into the season.

Eylia Love is a junior and the team's primary scorer last season. She hasn't started in the first two games this year. Love's free throw shooting is an area where she needs to improve. She is one of three players to attempt more than 300 shots last year and her usage is enough to swing games.

Tonie Morgan is a talented basketball player from Tallahassee, Florida. She is expected to play as Eylia Love's backup at Tech. Tonie was the All-Big Bend Player of the Year for the second straight year. She was ranked 24th out of high school on ESPN's rankings.

Raeven Boswell is a freshman point guard from Austin, Texas. She is 5'11'', has quickness and defensive ability and a good transition offense. Her father is an Olympic high jumper.

Kara Dunn is a guard from Kennesaw, Georgia. She is the reigning AJC All-State player and two-time GHSA Region 7 Player of the Year. Kara is 5'11'', good enough for 61st overall and 17th at the guard position.

Inés Noguero Outeiral is a freshman from Spain. She played in Euro 18U's this year. President Cabrera helped recruit her. She will probably have limited playing time.

Tech has a good record in the ACC, winning against Wake Forest, Miami, Clemson and Notre Dame. The rest of the conference is divided into two groups: the teams to watch are the recent conference powers like Louisville and NC State, and the traditional heavyweight Notre Notre Dame. Tech went a clean 6-0 against these teams last year. They also play North Carolina, Duke, Virginia, Syrcasue, Boston College and Pittsburgh. If Tech goes 2-2 or better in these games, they could be serious contenders for a double bye in ACC Tournament and a conference championship.

Jack Purdy is very optimistic about the team's chances this season. Blanche Alverson believes that the Georgia Tech team will be resilient and have respect for each other.

Georgia Tech Women's Basketball is a team that showed flashes of a great team last year. The team is without Lorela Cubaj and Lotta-Maj Lahtinen. They play next night in Auburn in a homecoming game for Head Coach Nell Fortner, Associate Head coach Blanche Alverson and Sport Performance Coach Shannon Jackson.
