Stylish South Americans can work Euro giants hard

As statements of intent go, no side produced a more emphatic one than Germany last week.

The Germans, former champions and among this year’s favourites, kicked off their Group H campaign against Morocco, always a fixture that had comfortable win written all over it.

However, there is comfortable and then there is ruthless. Germany showed no mercy to the North African nation, crushing them 6-0 with another effort disallowed.

But while the world’s 72nd-ranked side were never likely to offer much resistance to the German machine, the 25th – Colombia – are set to be far more of an obstacle.

The South Americans also got their World Cup off to a winning start with an excellent 2-0 success over South Korea, with gifted 18-year-old striker Linda Caicedo shining.

Germany are clear favourites for this game but we now know that the Colombians can be threatening, having carved out 17 efforts on the South Korean goal, almost identical to the Germans against the Moroccans.

With Caicedo, Leicy Santos and Mayra Ramirez there is quality attacking potential. These are players who earn a buck in Spain’s top level and are dangerous.

Colombia are also tough and competitive. Germany should win this but back them, with each side to net, at 12/5.

Buhl the bet to find the net

There are any number of first or anytime goalscoring options, especially in the attack-minded German ranks.

They bossed possession against Morocco and are set to do likewise against Colombia. So the chances should pile up.

Alexandra Popp would have thrilled a lot of punters by bagging the opener against the Moroccans and will be a warm order once again.

But Klara Buhl at 5/4 to score anytime is worth considering, bearing in mind the 22-year-old left winger fired three shots in Germany’s opener, scoring once.

The Bayern Munich star, voted into the Team of the Tournament by coaches at last summer’s Euros, has already netted 15 times at almost a goal every other game for her country and will be a danger around the box.

Group tensions could see card numbers rise

Buhl to score can be the cornerstone of a bet builder with Germany to win the second element of the treble.

To round off a 7/2 shot, back over 2.5 cards, because this encounter could get tasty.

Colombia are no shrinking violets. They will put in tackles and try to unsettle the Germans. The South American side picked up two yellow cards against South Korea, a match that featured four cautions before the break.

At last year’s Copa America Feminina, the Colombians featured in six games, all of which produced at least two cards, and four of which had over four.

And to add to the disciplinary mix, the referee for this Germany-Colombia clash, Melissa Borjas from Honduras, has presided over one game already in this Women’s World Cup, Italy’s 1-0 win against Argentina in Group G – a match in which she brandished six cards.
