Germany in need of a response

Two-time Women’s World Cup champions Germany face South Korea in their final Group H fixture this morning, needing a win to guarantee a place in the knockout stages.

The Germans go into their third mini-league match with their future in the tournament in the balance after a surprise, and probably undeserved, 2-1 defeat to Colombia last time out.

The South Koreans have once again struggled on the big stage and are at the foot of the standings with no points.

Mathematically they can still qualify, but must win by at least five goals and also hope Colombia win their game against Morocco.

The South Koreans remain a dangerous team despite their struggles but they have consistently underperformed at World Cups, having lost all three group games in the last edition of the tournament. The Germans can take advantage as they seek the victory they need to progress.

Germany thumped Morocco 6-0 in their opener and the North Africans then went on to beat South Korea, so it seems reasonable to suggest the European big guns could win with plenty of room to spare today and cover a -2 handicap.

Popp the clear threat

When Germany win, Alexandra Popp usually hits the net – and she is the clear standout to open the scoring.

She got the first and second goals against Morocco and was also on target from the spot in the defeat to Colombia.

The Wolfsburg forward has seven goals in her previous seven games for club and country and can add to her haul, which would also mean she achieves the feat of netting in every group match at this year’s event.

Dabritz a card contender and Popp to strike twice

A number of South Korea players lead the card market but the Asian team are generally fairly well behaved and none of them went into the book in the defeat to Morocco.

The value play is to look for a candidate from the Germany team, and Sara Dabritz is an interesting option at a big price.

The Lyon midfielder has one booking in six appearances for her country in 2023 and picked up two yellow cards in 12 league games for her French club last season.

As Germany go into the game needing a result, they may have to resort to physicality at times – and Dabritz looks one of the more likely of their players to fall foul of the referee.

Combining her to be shown cautioned with Popp to strike at least twice results in a tempting 47/1 bet builder. Popp struck two against Morocco and has scored two or more goals on four occasions for club and country during 2023.

With Germany needing to make a statement after their slip-up against Colombia, Popp may be able to finish the group stage with a flourish as she bids to top the scorers chart in Australia and New Zealand.
