Giants vs. Cubs prediction and odds for Tuesday, Sept. 5 (Back Kyle Hendricks)

The Chicago Cubs took Game 1 of their series against the San Francisco Giants on Monday, riding a strong performance from All-Star Justin Steele to a 5-0 win.

Chicago is now three games up on the No. 3 wild card spot, and it looks like a great bet to finish in the playoff field in 2023.

The Cubbies will turn to veteran Kyle Hendricks on Tuesday against San Francisco opener Ryan Walker.

Let’s dive into the odds and my best bet for this matchup:

The Giants bullpen – Walker included – has been impressive in the 2023 season, posting a 3.73 overall ERA.

Still, I don’t know if I can trust a group of pitchers in this game given San Francisco’s offensive struggles as of late.

The Giants failed to score on Monday, moving them to dead last in OPS over the last month, and they’ve scored just four runs in their last four games combined.

Facing Hendricks won’t make things any easier, as the veteran has been rejuvenated in 2023. He’s posted a 3.59 ERA, 3.87 FIP this season and was money in his final five starts in August.

After getting lit up by the Atlanta Braves, Hendricks proceeded to post a 2.48 ERA over his next five outings to end the month.

I think he can get the best of a struggling Giants offense that will have to hope several bullpen arms will hold up to get a win. I just don’t see that being the case.
