Giants vs. Cubs prediction and odds for Wednesday, Sept. 6 (Cubbies aim for sweep)

The Chicago Cubs continue to distance themselves from the pack in the National League wild card race, winning back-to-back games against the San Francisco Giants to move five games ahead of them in the standings.

San Francisco is now two games back of the Cincinnati Reds for the final wild card spot in the NL, and the team really needs a win on Wednesday to salvage something from this series with Chicago.

The Giants allowed 11 runs in a bullpen game on Tuesday night, and they’ll go to a potential opener in Alex Wood, who has worked out of the bullpen a good chunk of the 2023 season despite normally being a starter.

The Cubs counter with Jordan Wicks, who is making his third start of the 2023 season.

Let’s break down the odds and my best bet for this matchup:

I think the Cubs are in a great spot to pull off the sweep in this game, and it starts with how these teams fare against left-handed pitching.

The Giants are already a bottom three offense in Major League Baseball over the last month, and the team is just 28th in OPS against lefties on the season.

Wicks has made just two Major League starts, allowing one run across five innings in each outing. He’s allowed seven hits, four walks and struck out 12 batters in those outings.

I think he has a slight advantage over Wood in this game, especially since I’m not sure how long the Giants allow Wood to go.

Since moving to the bullpen in late July, Wood has not pitched more than four innings in a single outing, which could mean that San Francisco needs to rely on the bullpen again tonight.

The Giants have a 3.84 bullpen ERA on the season, but the team struggled on Tuesday, using several arms in the process.

The Cubs offense has been better than San Fran’s as of late, and I have to give Wicks credit for how he’s started his MLB career. I don’t mind laying the juice with the Cubs to pull off the sweep on Wednesday afternoon.
