Gold Trip bolts home to win the Melbourne Cup

Gold Trip won the Melbourne Cup at Flemington Racecourse on Tuesday (Nov 1). He was trained by Ciaron Maher and David Eustace and won by a length and a half from Emissary. High Emocean, also trained from Maher's stable, placed third. The field of 24 was reduced to 22 after Point Nepean was scratched on Monday and Lunar Flare failed a veterinarian inspection on the morning of the race. The Cup went ahead after police were called to investigate alleged vandalism at the track. An unnamed person contacted the broadcaster and claimed responsibility for pouring the sludge on Flemmons' track as a protest against the Victorian Racing Club.
