Melbourne Cup noms full list: 17 from Maher-Eustace

Reigning Melbourne Cup winner Gold Trip, set to resume at The Valley on Saturday, is among 17 Ciaron Maher and David Eustace-trained horses nominated for the race that stops a nation.

Victorian Racing Club on Tuesday will announce a full list of nominations for the Melbourne Cup after 1pm.

Only five horses have won the Cup more than once in its 162-year history: Archer (1861-62), Peter Pan (1932 and 1934), Rain Lover (1968-69), Think Big (1974-75) and Makybe Diva (2003-05).

Gold Trip is slated to return in either the Group 2 Feehan Stakes (1600m) – a Cox Plate qualifier – first-up on Saturday at The Valley or the 2040m Benchmark 100.

Maher has ruled out English stayer Saint George, due to a "small setback" in the UK.

Saint George will arrive in Australia later in the spring to be prepared for an autumn campaign aimed at the 2024 Sydney Cup.

"Given he's still a Northern Hemisphere 3yo with plenty of upside, we have erred on the side of caution," read a Ciaron Maher Racing statement.

Saint George was rated a $15 chance for the Cup in TAB's pre-nominations market.

Maher-Eustace entries include High Emocean, who placed third in the Cup last year after winning the Bendigo Cup, Australasian Oaks winner Affaire A Suivre and Group 1 winner Smokin' Romans.

Mornington Cup winner Right You Are, already qualified for the Caulfield Cup, will also be aimed at the first Tuesday in November at Flemington.

Other entries include Ashrun, Convener, Dillian, Duke De Sessa, Floating Artist, Future History, Interpretation, Lionel, Mr Buster, Promises Kept, United Nations and Verona.

Comeback stayer Floating Artist finished fourth in the 2021 Melbourne Cup behind Verry Elleegant, Incentivise and Spanish Mission.
