Golden Slipper at Rosehill Tips, Race Previews and Selections

The field is confirmed, the barriers set, and we are ready for the world’s richest race for two-year-olds!

The 2023 Golden Slipper field is rich with some of the best juveniles in the country, includes entries from some of the biggest stables, and has even attracted the interest of some of the best international jockeys on the planet.

With a case to be made for many, I’ve run the rule over every galloper, and you can find my complete 2023 Golden Slipper Tips below.

Suggested Bets

  • 3 Units E/W #7 Shinzo
  • Boxed Trifecta of the selections below

Golden Slipper – Winner

I thought that his performance in the Pago Pago Stakes last time suggested that the penny has really dropped, and I’ve put Shinzo on top of my 2023 Golden Slipper tips.

Shinzo showed plenty of promise at the trials prior to debuting, and while racing greenly in the Canonbury Stakes first-up, he still managed to fill the minors behind Red Resistance.

That effort was followed up with another handy one for second in the Skyline Stakes, while further improvement resulted in a rather easy, and eye-catching win in the Pago Pago Stakes last time.

Shinzo is extremely well bred, by Snitzel and out of two-year-old Group 1 winner Samaready, and the booking of leading Irish jockey Ryan Moore obviously adds further confidence this week.

Suggested Bet: No. 7 Shinzo

Golden Slipper – 2nd

Cylinder has hardly put a hoof wrong since debuting, and he is a fitting occupant of the top line of Golden Slipper betting ($3.50 at publish).

The Exceed And Excel colt finished second in each of his first two career starts back in November, and returned this time with a lovely effort to break his maiden in the Silver Slipper.

He franked that performance with another smart performance and win in the Todman Stakes a fortnight ago, and will take further improvement into the Slipper.

Like it or hate it, James McDonald takes the ride after being cleared of previous charges, and that is obviously a big ‘up’ for Cylinder’s chances of winning again.

Suggested Bet: No. 5 Cylinder

Golden Slipper – 3rd

Steel City simply could not have been more impressive last weekend, but she has drawn into the Golden Slipper field out in the carpark (barrier 15).

The Merchant Navy filly finished second in each of her first two career starts, including the Widden Stakes here at Rosehill back in January.

She was absolutely luckless and didn’t appear to enjoy racing (as much) at the Victorian way of going in the Blue Diamond, but responded with a three-length win in the Magic Night Stakes last week.

Regan Bayliss understandably stays in the saddle for the Slipper and if the filly does get some luck in running, she can fight out the finish again.

Suggested Bet: No. 15 Steel City

Golden Slipper – 4th

One galloper that I thought was majorly over the odds in Golden Slipper betting this year is Empire Of Japan ($51 at publish).

Empire Of Japan won the Breeders’ Plate on debut back in October, and he returned from a freshen up to finish third behind the likes of Fire Lane and Platinum Jubilee on Christmas Eve.

He was too far back, but finished off well for sixth in the Magic Millions Classic, and I thought that he clearly needed his first run back from another freshen-up when fourth in the Todman Stakes, last time out.

Having drawn an inside barrier, I think that Sam Clipperton can settle just in behind the early leaders this week, and with a clear crack at them, I really do think he can be in the finish.

Suggested Bet: No. 9 Empire Of Japan
