Goodwood Cup Runners: A look at the possible runners for staying showpiece

We take a look at the potential Goodwood Cup runners for the Group 1 staying contest, which is the feature race on day one of Glorious Goodwood and a strong field of top notch stayers are set to line up. Not only do we look at the potential contenders for glory, but also take a look at the latest odds for the marathon event...

John Gosden saddled Stradivarius to a record-breaking four wins in the Goodwood Cup during his illustrious career and the legendary handler could have a strong hand in the 2023 running of the 2m contest as mightily-impressive Queen's Vase hero Gregory and Ascot Gold Cup winner Courage Mon Ami could both take their chance on August 1.

Gregory has won all three starts to date on the track and showed with a stunning staying display at the Royal meeting that he could be the next staying star to grace the Gosden yard and with the St Leger a possible end of season target then he could look to become the first horse since the aforementioned Stradivarius to win this race as a three-year-old. Receiving significant weight from his older rivals in the Goodwood Cup, should he line up, the son of Frankel was doing all his best work at the finish in the Queen's Vase, where he beat Saint George (16/1), and that victory has earned him quotes of around the 2/1 mark for the Goodwood Cup.

Courage Mon Ami is another unbeaten Gosden contender that could take his chance, but he's available at 6/1, at the time of writing, so it could be his kept for alternative options. However, if the son of Frankel does line up then he has to be a huge contender as he was a stunning winner of the Ascot Gold Cup and that race could provide a whole host of notable clues for the Goodwood Cup, which has always been one of the star events on the staying calendar.

Andrew Balding's Coltrane has been one of the most consistent performers on the staying scene for the last few seasons and he warmed up for a crack at the Gold Cup with a fine win in the Sagaro Stakes at Ascot, but he was unable to land Group 1 glory at the Royal meeting as he was just edged out by Courage Mon Ami. Available at 3/1 for the Goodwood Cup, the six-year-old could slightly enjoy the step back to two miles, as he was just outstayed in the closing stages of that Royal Ascot event and he's shown before he has a decent turn of foot that he can maintain, so the Balding team will head to the south coast full of confidence.

Charlie Johnston's Subjectivist ran an absolute stormer at Ascot in the Gold Cup when coming third as he had been off the track for nearly two years and the former Gold Cup winner put in a tremendous performance - when well backed - by coming third at Ascot. A former winner at Goodwood, the six-year-old could improve for those exertions last month and he adds notable depth to the contest here.

Aidan O'Brien trained Kyprios to victory in this event 12 months ago and the Ballydoyle supremo's team could be spearheaded by Emily Dickinson (10/1), who finished fourth in the Gold Cup, while last year's St Leger winner Eldar Eldarov was disappointing in the Gold Cup at the Royal meeting, but is a classy performer and is another that could enjoy the drop back to two miles in what should be a scorching renewal.
